| Show HORRIBLE F afew A FEW days ago ao we stated that some of the merchants of this city were importing oleomargarine in considerable quantities and selling it for genuine gennine butter our object in naming namin this fact was purely to protect the gullic public from imposition n and to enable the people to avoid having their herlth injured by the use of an injurious urious article the week before last some curious developments were made at the meeting I 1 of the health committee of the new york senate among the adulte rations in food examined was that ot of oleomargarine one of the witnesses brought before the board was a f feeble feebie man of about thirty years of age he het had been employed in the packing roomi of an oleomargarine factory if he c had not been there long iong bea before ore his his hands became sore and raw soon they began to swell and the nails dropped f romels fingers fou flu gers the liquid from froin the butter rotted his clothes and boots caused his skin to crack IN his teeth to loosen and his hair to come out ills his condition became so deplorable that he was obliged to go to a hospital for treatment the physician there told him that he was oni only y half a man anyway and that if he went back to work vork in the factory again it would kill him ills his health was shattered and lie he had bad been unable to work since he be left the hospital last january he ill testified that other wor workmen kinen in the factory were affected similarly but none so severely as himself other ather witnesses testified to the illness and death of workmen in other oleomargarine factories physicians present fe stifled testified that the peculiar conditions of the system of such victims were caused by contact with the nitric acid which is put into the oleomargarine as a preservative serva tive it acts on the system as a powerful powers til caustic destroying the animal tissue irreparably the objector object of ol putting kuttim it with the fatty substances used in oleomargarine is to destroy the animal tissue deodorize it and as a preservative one physician testified that he attributed the large increase of fatality in particular kinds of disease to the general use of adulterated butter perhaps local consumers who peruse this article will be more particular after this about ascertaining whether the butter they purchase is the genuine product of the cow or the imported stuff known know n as oleomargarine |
