that runs out of the state of nevada its waters first rise in what was once called the valley of a thousand springs more than loo 00 miles milea 1 north from here and immediately west of the rim of the great basin these waters sink and rise rifle beveral several times and finally form this turbulent stream on the upper muddy the water ig fg 19 3 warm and has a milky appearance at overton it Is ia cold and clear nearly all ali the timber along this stream was planted by the mormons cormons Mor mons ss I 1 often hear the question asked why did the mormons cormons Mor mons come here and lay jay out or a then pull up stakes and throw ali ail this away I 1 ask the question myself there Is good land and it is easily watered the creek overflows in places and causes tule swamps but these are easily drained and when once dried they will burn say bay 12 inches deep of the apil and every acre thus reclaimed is equal to the missouri bottoms when this and the valleys lying north were yere settled they were supposed to belong to utah when the line was drawn this chain of valleys fell on the nevada side bide and though the people had bad paid their talesin taxes in utah they were required to pay them over again to nevada for four years bai bat back baik k which they deIl dell declined ned to do and the Muddy ites left while the more gritty catts s neither ran nor paid the february 1883 editor deseret neav newy holding meeting within forty miles of cincinnati elder priti and myself on the sixteenth went to the city and found thousands 0 houses under water causing many thousands of its citizens to t 0 home less depending upon the c charity of others on arriving at the waters edge we took boat from pearl street to ire ibe cincinnati side of the covington bridge and in doing so BO passed by hundreds of four five and six story buildings the first stories of which were filled and very many even the second story partially so one story buildings being covered up entirely with the exception except ion lon of a small portion of the roof on arriving at the bridge and walking to the centre we looked for some time upon the grand view presented before us in the raging flood that has rendered thousands homeless and des deg destitute who two weeks ago wen wem in comparatively easy circumstances crossing over to covington kentucky we found very many of the large buildings for numbers of blocks on the river side under water to the first and second stories causing thou thousands ands of dollars damage but mostly falling on men who are able to stand it and therefore not much buffering suffering or distress among the poorer classes other than there generally is in the overcrowded Chris chrls christian thin cities it crossin crossing 9 he the licking river biver to newport we had bad to take boat again from the newport side of the bridge some eight blocks to madison street passing hundreds of some tumbled over and held by ropes from floating down the river others covered except about one foot of the roof three and tour four story buildings with ladders to the windows families living in the second and third stories prefer doing ao to leaving their property to the mercy of the roughs boughs that are watching for an opportunity port unity tv to rob and plunder it was a most pitiable sight to see hundreds of buildings wren wrenched cheli cheil from their foundations and ogal coal sheds stables one story frame cramb houses and outhouses out houses hurdled huddled up together with drift and rubbish that has accumulated during the raging of the floods in newport alone there are some men women and children that are left hom homeless eleEs and destitute having to be provided for by charitably disposed persone persona per sone but notwithstanding all that is be ing done the but bum buffering suffering ering of those poor people must be fearful and in looking at their haggard faces you can ean read distress and misery in every feature Cro crossing esing the newport bridge to cincinnati again we traveled some bome two or three miles along the waters edge and it is really impossible to describe the fearful destruction st of property and the number ot of houses under water arriving near mclean avenue on gest gast street where once stood the southern depot we saw amarge body of water completely cc vering covering the ruins of the fallen depot only a small portion of the shed left standing on passing along the streets we could see hundreds of poor creatures trudging along looking more dead than alive carrying a tin bucket and an old basket going for their allowance of bread and soup coup indeed it is heartrending to see them for they look pale thinly clad and hungry and as an though they have not had a good meal for a month the distress and destitution is and will be for some time to ful to think about for thousands of men have been thrown out of employment besides those who have suffered by the flood and the great majority of the working classes in the city cannot afford to lose one dayss day s work for it Is ia all they can do to provide the necessaries of life with constant work we are holding meetings in this section of ohio and have fair attendance at our meetings considering the excitement caused by the flood we are staying for a short time with brother jonathan |
