The state of Texas being the home grounds of such native Indians as the Comanches, the Lipan Apaches and the Seminoles, John Ford thought there would he little difficulty in rounding up a representative group. Hardly Ferocious The first weeks search for the blood brothers needed for scenes with Stewart and Widmark proved futile, when it was discovered that most of the resident Indians are so assimilated that pure strains are almost nonexistent or too rich to want to work and even if available not facially ferocious or physically imposing enough for the scenes Ford had scheduled. Without Visas The second week of looked more searching promising when word was received that a giant tribe of Kickapoos lived a number of miles below the Mexican border. Assistant Pat Ford was selected to make contact, and early on a morning he headed for the border. There he picked up two Mexican army scouts and made his way 125 miles south of the small border town of Piedras Ncgras to the foot of the Muszquiz Mountains. There because of an absence of any roads or, paths the trio was forced to abandon a sedan mode of transportation to drive a final 50 miles by jeep, a trip which took the searchers four hours. Pat Ford returned to Braekettville the next morning with the results of the negotiations. Not Like That It seems, he Explained, that the chief of the Kickapoos had recently attended a western movie somewhere in Mexico and didnt cotton to the way Indians were depicted. Therefore, he told the interpreter, who relayed the information to Pat Ford, who In turn reported to John Ford, that before hed allow' his braves to make their film debuts, he wanted to see the script. Furthermore, he insisted, since he couldnt read English the script would have to be translated into Sparfish. A few minutes later Ford Columbia Pictures studios in Hollywood that he was transporting a dozen Navajos, from Monument Valley a few states away to take. the key parts he had planned for the Indians he had sought and hiring 40 husky Mexicans to dress as Indians for atmosphere. wired MCDONALD'S 146 Iasi 33rd South u t' .
