Show BY PRESIDENT JOSEPH esith hll hil delivered in pazie parie idaho sunday morning august 19 1883 reported BY ay jonh JOHH che the of the tho world towards the people V of goutheir God clod Their chein against the lat ter day saints the truthfulness truthful nebs neba of the tha no refuted the latter day saints will wui compare favorably with any other people on the zaca zam of the theearta earth wb why then are they proscribed Because emuse the tho world bate them Ferse pense Persecution cution the lot of the saints past persecutions and their result che The s mormon problem still buu unsolved and more difficult ot of solution than ever eter ev erLet ut the saints live theli thelt hedglon and the dmd lora will bring them oc off triumphant I 1 HAVE nave been extremely interested this morning in listening to the very excellent remarks of brother cannon I 1 feel that in answer to the desires and prayers of the congregation the lord has blessed brother cannon in hia hla remarks and that through him he has made plain many very important truths and principles upon which it will be well for tor the congregation to reflect and to treasure up in their hearts my mind wab wag led to reflect while brother cannon was speaking upon the inconsistency harshness and unreasonableness of the world in their attitude toward us as a people and upon the manner in which they have sought to deal with what they term inthe the mormon question the words of the savior in relation to the hatred of the world towards the people of god flashed through my mind rie hie if ye were of the world the world would love his own but because yo ye are not of the world but I 1 havo have chosen you out of the world therefore fores sores the world habeth you yon jesus and his desei desel ples pies were everywhere spoken against everybody almost reviled them when jeans cast out devils it was wab bald baid to have been done by the power of Bel nel beelzebub the prince of devils that ho he healed the sick by the bame pow power er that ho he restored the bight sight of the blind by the same bame power and und all the works of mercy and charity wh icho icHe performed were attributed to the power of satan batan it Is very much the bame in this dispensation no matter how good you may be you who profess to be lat ter day bainie bainte no matter now how virtuous you may bey beg be you yon a ararat sze eze adul adulterers adultery tere no by the world lib luaui buvitt xu vitt how ho ilow w honest you yon may be you are called dishonest honesto no matter how innocent you may be of all the crimes that are known the sectarian world declare you aro ara unfit to live because of your corruptions corrupt ions and abominations no matter how charitable you may be they claim that you lack the elements of char ity and of merey mercy consequently they think it behooves beno oves them and the powers that be ba to move aza aga against ingi you for your deat deac destruction ruction it was for tor this reason that the congress of the united a little while ago agos was compelled by an influence and a power that it could not or dare not mist gist to pasa a 4 moat t unconstitutional a moat most unjust and wicked act not for the purpose of depriving an innocent and people of their legitimate rights fights rights that belong to them under the constitution of our country have we sought to injure anybody have we sought to deprive any people of their rights have we sought to tear down or to destroy any part of the earth are tho the vile charges that are us true no they are not you yon know they are not there la Is not a man or a woman under the sound of my voice this thia morning but knowels they know they live that the ch charges gea that are made against the lat zat latter iatter r day saints are false they my bay that thad at we havo have been in inyeard years yeara past in tile the habit of committing murder we are charged with having mur dered strangers that came amongst usi ubi we are charged with having murdered apostate cormons mormons because they had apostatized t laed from us we am are charged with oppressing the POOP people le budwith and with keeping them under tyranny tyran and those who make thebe theme charges claim that it Is ia because of their influence in utah the influence of the world of the public presa press the presence pre senca in our midst of officers or 01 the law who ho have been sent I 1 by y the tho president of the united states to rule ruie over us that this murderous propensity and thia this power for ev evil 11 that has hereto fore been exhibited by the latter day saints have been cheo chec kedl kedi NOW who is there that Is acquainted quain ted with the tho history of utah or with the history of thib thia people people but knows that all thole those things that have been charged against this people are li bellous and as false as heli bell who does not know that such a reign of terror never did exist in utah or among this thia people anywhere I 1 came to utah in 1848 1 I have been a resident among this people from mychaild hood I 1 have been cognizant of nearly everything that has transpired of a public character amone among the latter day saints for the last 80 30 years and I 1 am a witness and can egin and do bear my testimony that all these charges are false and that the people today to day are a fair example of what they have always been from the beginning who of you are murder murderers ern enn who ot of you professing to be latter day saints are thieves and robbers who of you professing the bame same thing are adulterers and whore mongers bongers mon gers who of you professing to be latter day SaIn saints curse and swear and blaspheme the name of god who of you yon would oppress your neighbor or would rob him of his rights who of you professing to be latter he bo ready to protect the rights end and to maintain the liberties of the st stranger ranzer within our gates as you yon would to protect your own rights or those of your neigh neighbor bor bol la Is not this the case today to day yes was it ever different to this was there ever a different condition of things existed in the midst of this people you ym very well weli know that there never was waa men who have done wrong in times past have been held accountable for their acts aota to the law by the onn off officers leers of the law men who today to day are ungovernable and commit crimes are amenable to the law and must answer for their crimes this has always been the case the gospel net has gathered of every klud kind but Is ia a whole community to be held responsible for individuals whose propensities lead them to commit crimes if we are to bo judged upon that principle will who be be exempt from the same judgment if god should judge the world in this manner he would execute the whole world none nono would be exempt I 1 think as a com corn muni as communities we will fona fora kompare pare favorably with any on the cace of the earthe earth I 1 think there willbe will be found far less crime among the latter later day bain batata ts than may be found in other communities of like numbers anywhere else eise I 1 L belleve elleve there is less crime less Vick wickedness edness less drunkenness mad and ferrei fow few of otren atren fences ces ot oi eny eay kind among the latter lutter day saints than can be found among any other people of equal numbers in the world and in saying this I 1 am not boasting boa eting of the latter day saints for burely surely if we are latter day saints crime and wickedness should have no part in us no man professing protesting to be a member of tb the le church of jesus christ of latter day saints should be guilty of anything that would cause the blush of shame to appear in the face on the contrary wo we ought to live above suspicion we ought to live free from crime free from wickedness and sin of every de description therefore to say BAY that the latter day saints are the best bast people I 1 know of in tile the I 1 saying more than should be said and can be said honestly and truthfully we vve ought not to bo be guilty of sin the teach ings of the servants ser Eer of god have been toward righteousness honesty and virtue and towards everything that is calculated calculate dillo dilio to elevate and ennoble maln main mankind kind this has his been the burden of the teR teaching ching of the servants of god from the day that the church was until the present time and if the latter day saints are not the best people upon the earth it is because they have not harkened hearkened hark bark ened to the councel that haa has been given them why then should we be proscribed bed why then should the people ot of the world malign us ua and seek to blacken our names and our characters why should they seek to bring persecution and evil upon us the answer la Is to be ba found in tho the words of the savior S vlon vior 1 I have chosen you yon 0 out ut of the world and therefore the world hate you so 80 long as you maint maintain lin tin the principles of the gospel so ao long as you defend the principles of vir virtue tule tile of truth and of righteousness so long as you stand by the doctrines of christa christ which have been revealed through joseph the prophet through brigham young the prophet and through president taylor and the oracles of god so long the world will be arrayed against you 80 10 I 1 long they will hate you and will seek beek to bring evil upon you unless they repent there thera la 13 question no abou about tit it many people will wili not be convinced brother cannon has alluded to people who visit us ns they may be favorably impressed upon some bome points but still they retain in their hearts a prejudice they have received concerning no and they carry it away with them notwithstanding what they see bee this thia la Is ao ac cording to what jesus said bald they have eyes but they see not they nave have eara but they hear benr not they have hearts but they do not understand it liia lifa Is also said baid that 91 there are none so eo dest desir as those who will not heary beary hear and none so blind as 89 those who will not see bee many of thom who visit utah come filled with puch fuch an amount of prejudice that they will not allow their senses to be con convinced vIncet of the truth troth hence they go away as prejudiced as when they came nevertheless Never theles when men come with their minda minds divested of prejudice who can see ree and are disposed to see and are lib eral ersi minded enough to look at things in their true light they do in a measure get correct views and ideas in relation to us A few such men have come to utah and gone away enlightened enlighten edy eds and have told the truth to the world but bai notwithstanding they hey tell the truth they are generally disbelieved RS as wo we are when we tell it we would naturally suppose that a man jike like judge ciack on legal matters mattern was an autho authority az ty in ia the world would be be liv ildved but the tue th moment mam elut that mans maus man mau wit with h all ali a 11 his talent and prestige nrc stige suge stood up in the balls of congress and undertook to reason upon the constitutional rights of the people called latter day saints he be was denounced noun ced and the soundness of his conclusions questioned by judges lawyers lawyer and statesmen he was held up to ridicule because he be dared to dis dib course upon the constitutional rights ol 01 the people called latter day saints and it has hag been so with everybody else that has dared to speak a word in favor of the people of god having their rights it was so 80 with those who dared to deak speak neak in favor of the son of god and uis wis disciples those who dared dated to do BO 00 were considered unworthy cf a being believed on oath their mong could not be received they were partial and athas it has become so in relation to this people let any man lift up his voice in the defense of the people of god and he will at I 1 denounced by a c certain influential class and his hib influence among that clasa class of people who seem bent upon persecuting the latter litter day saints will wane no matter how much they may have honored his counsels prior to that will this continue continua to be the case yes yea more and more for as we increase in union in ralth raith intelli rence gence and in political and religious rel reI RIOUS influence the hatred of the wicked will increase against us then will the heathen rage and the wicked imagine a vain thine thing and their efforts to destroy us will wili I 1 proportionate ly increase but will they succeed will t they ey accomplish their desires just in a proportion as they have done it hitherto and no more when they drove the latter day saints out of missouri and had the prophet and his com confined in liberty jail the world re in the belief the tha backbone of mormonism alam was broken but they had bad reckoned without their host bost they had not based their calculations upon the facts these thebe the sevel sequel proved that they had bad commit committed tid a grand mistake notwithstanding that general clark on the square in far west said faid to joseph and his companions that their doom was sealed and their die dle was cast enst they were reckoning without their host they had not calculated upon the power of god in these matters they simply pimply thought they had bad joseph joeeph smith in their power and that by destroying de him they would destroy c mormon mormonism iBm but nut the lord delivered him from his enemies and from nisso missouri url uri he came to illinois mormonism as it is called in the world from being a village grew into a elty city the city of nauvoo one of the most beautiful b cities in the west of america we became possessed of chartered rights and an influence which controlled the county of hancock in the state of illinois affected tho the political status of othor other counties surrounding we grew grow from a handful to an armful and then the naze nage of the enemy was again stirred up until they finally succeeded in taking the lives of the servants of godi gods joseph smith and his brother hyrum at this they rejoiced nind and congratulated each other s and concluded that they had bad done don e a good thing colem would oud now ciare to trouble the world but again they had reckoned without their host bost again they had bad based their calculations upon false promises they had not considered the power connected with this work they had not contemplated the nai ture turc of the power of god from I 1 nauvoo we were thrust out into the wilderness but we sought out and located in utah by the guidance of the almighty As brother george A smith used to bays bay we came willingly because we were obliged to we had no other place to go to But bui sotar botar BO tar far as accomplishing the object they had in view the destruction truc tion of mormonism we know that they failed from a city we have crown grown to a territory in the united states and we have been able to honestly control the territorial government despite the de sirey biret the cunning cunn ingi the craftiness and all the fraudulent efforts of our en emles enemies now if it was difficult for the world to deal with the qu queston question eston eaton of in 1838 it was still briore more difficult for them to deal with it in 1814 1844 if it was difficult for them to deal with handle this 99 mormon question as they call it in 1846 when the people were mace made wandering outcasts upon the desert I 1 say any if it was a difficult thing for the government of the tae united I 1 and for the of tala this people to deal with the gin mormon formon question then is it not a far more difficult question for them to deal with to day As they turn over the wall lol iol it becomes higher and broader than it was before As they kick the mustard plant lo 10 I 1 the seed la Is scattered and it takes root and springs forth |
