ifor northern thern part of this county where I 1 have been lecturing and und preaching during the holidays I 1 inet met with good success in securing houses to lecture inand in and audiences to lecture to the schoolhouses school houses were all open tome except in one or two instances and I 1 enjoyed myself in my first trip traveling without purse or scrip I 1 found the majority of the people willing and anxious to hear what I 1 had bad to say and many of them imbued with a spirit of charity towards our people good order prevailed and I 1 trust some good was done in enlightening the minds minda of the people in regard to our history 1 also the history of Territory our the a principles of cooperation operation co od of farming stock raising etc all of which I 1 found the people interested in and could thereby daake make the a ame same a stepping stone to preach the first principles of the gospel I 1 did not lack for food or she shelter iter lter nor friends though I 1 did meet opposition and in some instances of a very unpleasant cb arac ter in one instance a man drove me away from his house when lie he found out what my faith was and followed nie me to where I 1 did get shelter and tried to get me turned out there but failed I 1 held heid agboli meeting thal that night well attended thanks to a great exten extent t to the opposition I 1 met I 1 have just received an to re return turn to thi the same asame quarter again and preach with the assurance of a large congregation gre gation I 1 expect to rest a few days and start out again I 1 have had bad some opportunity of examining the free schools of illinois and aud this county bounty of mclean is one olle of the leading counties of the state I 1 find that our schools compare very favorably with the tha schools here as regards buildings seats general accommodations and ud especially as regards quality of instruction st tion the text books in general use are days raya third part mc Guf feys readers Pinne Pin neos grammars I 1 jc Guffey ls spellers etc a cla ela class Q 4 of books that our utah teach ers ere consider behind the tah tishea es very much indeed the highest salary I 1 fouad found paid to teachers was fifty dollars these were male teachers rs educated at the state normal these schools I 1 speak of are the free schools and amm are supported by taxation the largest school I 1 met with numbered seventy seven the smallest seven what would a utah teacher think of sitting down to teach ten tou or twelve pupils at a salary of forty dollars a mont hafter educating himself tor for or the business I 1 I 1 have not mot yet seen geen any good reason to change my opinion relative to the tho deleterious results of the ay sy stem called free school which your many readers are doubtless aware I 1 opposed in my feeble way through the columns of your paper years ago I 1 am P on the other hand band more than ever convinced that utah has done well to avoid avold this mistake that our neighbors have I 1 made there are fine schools here sean separate and apart from ahlo the free fred school system that have havo been munificently endowed by state staid and general government and by private donation that have reputation and reflect great credit upon their founders in connection with this subject I 1 wish to make a correction correct len ien of an eror error made in a former communication in which I 1 stated that thal the bible had been iyih estate tate tato normal which I 1 am informed by one of the pupils is ig incorrect and further th that at the present faculty have hive daily reading lessons in the scriptures but that the board of general directors have enacted a clause forbidding its use but not enforcing it tho the weather has haa been very mild and pleasant so far during the winter and but for the mud would be very agreeable respectfully J LN r 0 r 0 A i Spend spending miu Mir Christmas as Mailing a cof unwell bawell lia fla well weil persons persona mind of the most favorable character we were treated with the th e greatest kindness and respect by the entire family and I 1 must not forget ti to mention their chubby handsome good natured intelli zent gent poking baby which gave lo 10 their home a homelike appearance pea pe arance ranee As we wei mormons cormons Mor mons of course arg are all ail fond of the dear innocents we must not forget them mr bennet rennet is an ex member of the wisconsin legislature a gentleman of influence in this section of country and I 1 think he is above the political corruptions corrupt ions lons of the theace tag lag age e and of a liberal mind he is favorable to our people and seems much interested in our doctrines he ile told Us on leaving his hi home to call often make hia hla homet homei our home and that we should always be welcome und I 1 assure you we appreciate such kindness 4 1 and thank 0 our ur god for raising up such friends to a assist alst us when we are far from home and friends of our faith on sunday while in Rock rockton torl tori we were informed that a poor wid owls child bad died the day before from the effects of a severe burn ana and mortification having I 1 taken pa place I 1 ce they were desirous 0 of fb burying her as soon as possible and there be being ng no one ong in the village who had ever made a EL connin coffin I 1 thought it would be doing no barm to do good even on sunday so I 1 took my coat off went to work with some help and an bif in a short time we had made a very respectable coffin previous ous to this they had invited md to preach the funeral sermon sern fon at 2 p pm the th e citizens met in the school house we conducted the ceremonies bie ble a and had bad an excellent opportunity n to preach the gospel and oui out faith in regard to the lead all the people present seemed pleased and well satisfied in irl the evening one man who anen wp first visited the village wanted anted us mobbed changed his hia feelings sa that that hightie night he walked three miles to hear us preach and expressed himself to mr bennet that lle ile lie he would rather hear bear the mormons cormons preach than tham an any Y ini minister nisto he beever ever even heard thus in fulfillment fulfilment of elder taylors words to us the lord opens up our way in a wonderful manner and we feel to praise his koly holy name we wp have now thirteen towns and villages whose meeting houses are open forus for Us to preach in and the people give us bedland board free of charge in most places many who through prejudice were our enemies are now our ft lends friends in some places placed they refuse us their meeting houses and treat beat us at first with contempt yet as we become better known in the neighborhood some of those even relent and at last open their doors our labors up to tor date have been confined to this county vernon county and crawford count county nyi IVI and I 1 bellev believe 0 a good work will yet be done in n this thid state where elders eldera will take their carpet sacks sucks in hand and leaving railroads go and hunt i the lost sheep in the far off esthey will find some for I 1 am gal satisfied that there are thousands in n this thia land who never heard of the mormons cormons Mor mons P only from their thein ene moles mies consequently we bear with the tha I 1 talk lda ida kindly d ii to them thern show them a better way vay and if we accomplish no more we at hi least lehst remove a great deal of pt udlea from their mind minds intelligent men meu who are somewhat acqua acquainted inte ld with gith affairs in utah will often saye baye 1 I cannot un der stand how it is your people 1 lear har bar ear ean BO 80 much injustice why in in imy other country they would tar and feather such villains da as the editors of that lying sheet which is published in salt lake bake 1 very many of the people are not in sympathy with the anti polygamy law they think we should haxe have the right to enjoy nna ana practise the rites and aud principles of our religion ulmo tl bested we have received invitations to visit grant county and hold meet I 1 inga n asi therefore we shall after new yearb yeara visit that county as y well as dane county and return here and labor in this district at lease till spring so that the innab stants in this part will be left with s out excuse I 1 think if all the elders would centralize their labors more greater great ergood rood good would result as i it does but little good to hold one meeting me eting in a place and then leave it to return no more the people like to talk with us and feel feet of our spirits spiff ts and thus they gain eonni dence and no doubt many hy by faith 1 ful labors will be yet brought t into the fold in some of the towns we preach in tile the ministers begin to raise a dreadful howl 11 telling the people we are wolves in cheeps clot ciot clothing hing bIng but there is one thing I 1 notice the people seem seeni to have stall lostell lo confidence in their preachers and in some places their influence forit amount to much the weather for several days lias has been beautiful for this cou country Atry we hold meeting
