WASHINGTON, Delegates to the rivers and harbors congress today passed a resolution calling "unwarranted" recent attacks by railway executives on waterway programs. The resolution charged the railroads with taking advantage pf depressed conditions to Intensify their "unfair" opposition to waterways. During the day, the congress heard the case of the railroads bluntly presented by Sanuel O. Dunn of Chicago, editor of Railway Age. Dunn said the country did not need Inland waterways: that the railroads could haul freight cheaper, and that government aid to waterways wss t' reatenlng the railroads with disaster. All his conclusions were disputed by Senator Brookhart of Iowa, who followed him. The Iowa senator said the railroads had contributed to the depression by exorbitant rates; that they had approximately $7,000,000,-00- 0 on watered stock In their valuations, and that if they did not readjust themselves to meet motor and water competition the government might Ilnd It necessary to take them over. President Hoover was praised for his attitude toward waterways and kind words were spoken for Secretary Hurley and Major Oeneral Lytle Brown, chief of army engineers. In the resolution. Senator Ransdell of Louisiana was elected president, succeeding Representative Riley Wilson of Louisiana, The convention ended today. in Case of Army Officer. fare |
