Show REMARKS ELDER CHARLES 0 nim RICH DELIVERED at the adjourned semiannual semi annual conference of the church of jesus christ of laifer baiter day saints in the mew new tabernacle salt zake lake city sunday october lith 1874 REPORTED BY ily DAVID W evans I 1 lra ira va rejoiced in listening to the instructions that we haye have received this morning as well as darlig daring daril duril g the whole of this conference it seems to ti me that they ought to make an everlasting impression upon the minds of the he saints aud nud that we one and all should be tic determined under the influence thereof te to live more faithfully and to keep the commandments of god as near as pos possible sibbi in all things and I 1 have no doubt that this Is the feel me ing at the present time of most of those who have attended this thia conference it is for us to guard against temptation that may be presented before us and when we ire leave this place that we duffer suffer not ourselves to do or to say eay anything that is wrong but be willing r with an cye eye single tingle to the glory of god to carry out the counsels of his servants and to perform all the labors required at our hands in aiding to advance his cause and to build up his bis kingdom upon the earth that we may prepare ourselves for that which la IA to come both on the earth and in la the tiie eternal worlds I 1 know very well that there Is no being upon the earth who ii thus engaged gut tut but what feels well weil nil all such r rejoice a in their labors and the spirit and powen power of god will rest upon the saluta when they take this course and adopt this policy polac v we have been permitted to live in one of the most auspicious times or dispensa tiong that has ever been ushered it in upon the earth the dispensation dispensa uon of the gathering together of all things in christ both which are arc in heaven and which are arc on earth we may feel our weakness and inability but it is not our strength or wisdom that is to bring about the ariu triumph mph of the purposes of god upon the earth we are workers coworkers co with our heavenly father and his power will bear off his saints la in the future aa as it has done in thelast the past and up to the present time it itic is upon his arm that we have to lean ican and in him we must put ou on r tru trust st when has there been a time when ilen lien the saints have trusted in god and been disappointed never inasmuch as we have done our part the almighty has never failed to do his and to fulfill his promis promises cs we have the tho power to carry on this work and to perfect ourselves and also to perform a labor for our benefit and for the benefit of our friends who lived before us kibo mho who did not have such an opportunity as we have this be impressed upon our oun minds and we should not summer suffer ourselves ours oure elves elres to ne neglect any duty that is incumbent upon us whether for our benefit or for the tha ben benefit olt fit of those who have lived before us when we pass behind the tall vail and meet with our friends if we can tell them that we were in the flesh we attended to and performed certain ordinances and ceremonies in their behalf which they while here had not the privilege of tending attending att ati to and find performing for themselves and which they had bad not power to ac accra erh eth crL in the spirit ap arlt i world it certainly will iz liv a 11 matter of rejoicing to us and also to them tn uti 1 if r on meeting them there we have to admit that we neglected to do that for their benefit which it had been in in our power to attend to we shall not feel pleasant picas ant and our friends will most assuredly asEn be disappointed in sp speaking cakIng of the temples now III in course of erection in which to perform the ordinances for the dead our hearts ought to be inspired with determinations to co all we can to push them forward to completion piet lon ion that in our day ohie ohle we yet live in the flesh we may have the privilege of doing a work therein for our d dead ead cad friends as well as for ourselves Allt alit all ali these bese things are before us and our eyes should be single singie to the glory of god and our hearts set upon building up his kingdom upon the vie earth and not upon objects that do not tend lend in this direction I 1 have felt to for r many years that I 1 was not rafe cafe in any place or upon any errand and had bad no business to be 1 in labor no matter what it might be uni unless us that business errand or labor was directed by the priesthood and I 1 feel today to day that all the labors and operations of me latter day saint sainte s temporal and spiritual ought to be organized and dire dirc directed eted 1 iy ay y the pr priesthood e s t which god has to lead le ad his people if our labors arc are thus dl directed act they will tell la in the right direction for the building up iding of the kingdom of god and not for the promotion of evil upon the earth this is a thing against which we should be continually on our guard human nature is 13 weak and many ix people opie ople when brought in contact with evil lull aen nen ces cesare are liable to bo be led away they are in danger and the best the garcet policy is to keep keel away from dangerous ground aud and beyond the range of evil and we ire not associate with those whose influence is evil etil our lives are made up of emall email items of labors performed a little at a ti time m p if our acts acta arc gloo if our words are buch huch bu e h that the righteous ca can n approve of them we need not fear when they arc are summed up and judgment rendered for our vur lives having been spent in the performance of good deeds it will be all right with us and if it we have bate this consciousness we can re joice jolce wherever we are arc I 1 can bear testimony that I 1 have never heen been disappointed when I 1 have been teen engaged in tho the wark of the lord and in carrying out the tile counsels ct of his r demuts unto me it I 1 ean fan lear tear that this Is the abak of 0 god and end that joseph smith was a prophet of god that brigham brig Brif tuam tham is h prophet of god and that the gospel which they have preached rl h ed to the latter day saints is the 0 gospel O 1 son of god and fine inas inasmuch in uch as we ilya liva according to its precepts we shall be delivered from evil salvation is revealed in the gospel and that salvation commenced to be received by na us when we obeyed it we can ba be freed from our sins eins when thea we learn and obey the truth forin for in the gospel there is deliverance from sin ein if cewill we will but apply its principle principles s to our ily lives when we find a di difficulty in the midst of the people it is simply because seme eeme one or more have done that which they ought not to have done and bad they applied the principles of the gospel applicable to that particular case the dim culty might have been avoided when we practice the principles of this gospel to perfection we shall be delivered from evil whether in this world or in I 1 the he world to come for instance if no murders arc are committed none of the tho evils will be experienced erlene perien triene eed ced ed which grow out of that crime if the 1 people g generally lly liy ily would cease lying the evils evil now sow resulting resu liing I 1 because ot of the great prevalence of falsehood III in the world would be unknown aad eo so we might enumerate all of the evils that arc are commit ed by the human family and say cay that if the principles of the gospel of christ were uni universally verbally observed the evils of every kind now co eo abundant in all parts of the world would be known no more then it la Is for us to whom this gospel has been revealed to learn icam what is right and to be faithful in practising practicing it and the more faithful we arc are in applying ourselves to this important duty the more speedily will evil disappear from amongst us and the salvation profited by the gospel be by us enjoyed aud and that Is pr precisely eckely what we want a present as well as an ele cle eternal clenal nal nai sai eal atlon ration by an application of the principles of the gospel to our daily dally lives if this course were pursued by mankind generally it would soon bring bringa about bouta a millennium or that still more happy time spoken of or by the prop prophets heta when the knowledge e C of god shall cover the earth as the watern cover the great deep anc when men ail sll 1 I the world over are friends and brother this is the direction in which the practice of the principles of the gospel leads us and a continued and clos closi attention thet e to will enable us to overcome every imperfection fec tion at the same ume lime our heavenly father is disposed to try those who profess to have taken upon them the name of christ and andin anden in fact he is trying us con continually un in order to prove whether wo we will serve him in all things if an evil is i 1 resented before UP us we must cither either receive or reject st it if we ire reject it we have overcome if we accept it we arc are overcome of evil and we may eay that we have cont continually a trial before usand us and it is for us Is t to be on our guard that we enter not into temptation and that we are not overcome no matter in what guise or how temptingly etil evil may way present itself to us we need to ho be vallant valiant before the lord valiant in testimony valiant tallant in keeping hlf his commandments valiant in rejecting every evil principle and practice that may be dresen presented ted before ns us and it this thu is our course and we continue therein the time will come cume when we will be counted worthy of an and exaltation amon amen among the sanctified tilled in the presence of our yat fat father I 1 feel to rejoice in the principles of the gospel that the lord has revealed to us ug and that many years ago I 1 had bad the privilege 11 of hearing bearing and obeying them I 1 can say that from that time until the present I 1 have never had the first moments sorrow because of anything that I 1 have been called railed to pass through in connection with he ic gospel and I 1 hope I 1 never shall chall my experience in thia this cause and kingdom has bas been a source of continual rejoicing and I 1 believe it vii il av e BO so to the end I 1 trust and later rater that this is also your experience and that sti ju j u and I 1 may continue dinue faithful to the cud that we may be counted worthy of the privilege of mingling in with 1 I that great company of the sanctified ial gaind and j just ast whom we have heard spoken of this mornIn ir and that with them we may receive a crown of glory and immortality ibis is my prayer in the name of the lord jesus amen |
