Show 6 B DESERET NEWS, FRIDAY, JUNE 29, 1973 Firms oppose changes VITAL STATISTICS engineer schools Local Births in Bv Rod Decker Deseret News staff writer The colleges of engineering at Utah's two state are too concerned with research and unresponsive to the needs of industry, a Thiokol of representative Chemical Co. said Thursday afternoon. Speaking at a public hearing before the Utah State Board of Higher Education. William E. Jo"s. who recruits and trains engineers for the firm, said the engineering faculties should turn from doing what professors want to do. to more service to the taxpayer. He was one of many speakers who opposed proposals made to the board by an ad hoc Engineering Committee and by Dr. F. E. Terman, engineering consultant and former Provost at Stanford University. Both reports recommend discontinuing the department of manufacturing engineering at Utah State University and the Nuclear Engineering Department at the University of Utah. One or both of the reports also call for trimming the B.S. degrees from industrial and materials engineering at the U. of U. and from agricultural and irrigation engineering at USU. Greater economy in engineering education was the aim of both reports, which were submitted May 15. - Jones and spokesmen from Hercules. Inc.: Eimco Corp.: Hill Air Force Base and other employers of engineers took particular exception to the recommendation to engineering. They argued that graduates with degrees in manufacturing g engineering are better paid and more sought after by industry than other engineers because they are better prepared for industrial work. Jones said it costs $50,000 for Thiokol to train most new engineers, but manufacturing engineers are ready tr go to work immediately. Dr. Wayne Brown, dean of the U of U. College of Engineering. asked the board to postpone changes in the engineering curricula at his school until next April. noted that the college has been unable to make administrative changes for the past 18 months due to a plan to combine the colleges of engineering and mining which was recently abandoned by the Board of Higher Education in response to measures passed by the State Legislature. Brown said the college will suggest changes of its own by He contr-overai- April. Faculty members from the departments in which the cutbacks are proposed defended their programs. Professor Abraham Sosin, director. DiviScience and at the U. of U.. sion of Materials Engineering said the undergraduate program in his division is closely related to a successful graduate program. He division noted the attracts more outside money than state Deleting unappropriations. dergraduate courses would not save much money. Sosin said. research Dr, Utah have Terman agreed that faculties engineering in been successful, research outside attractiug money. He said there is more research money per faculty . Berkeley. But the small dein the Utah schools partments are not producing enough graduates, he charged. Professor K. L. DeVrio , chairman of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at tho U. of U, said very little would be saved by eliminating dogrees in industrial or nuclear engineering, as both of them aro administered by the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Most students in industrial engineering are practicing engineers seeking further training at night. Devries said. Nuclear engineering is particularly important now because of the nation's need for energy, he added. June natural es wood Hospital NIELSON.
