Show : Shortage dampens tourism f BOISE (UPI) With a CM million annual tourist trade to protect, Idaho's promotion department is looking for ways to get tourists to Idaho on fewer gallons of gasoline in case the fuel shortage materializes. Lloyd D. Howe, executive secretary of the Department of Commerce and Development, said reports of the gasoline shortages are not going to help us any. He said he could not estimate how much a gasoline shortage would hurt the state's tourist trade. Howe said his staff has discussed new ways to promote travel to Idaho to combat the gasoline shortage. New advertising approaches would promote limited destination travel along with group travel by bus and airline and the use of individual vehicles when the tourists arrive in the state. Limited destinations could be accomplished by advertising one or two places for a tourist to visit during a vaca tion. Gov. Cecil D. Andrus put forth a plan urging residents to take their vacations within the state, driving slowly to save gas. Andrus said the gasoline shortage may be a move by the larger oil companies to get the Alaska pipeline os to force some of the smaller independent gasoline companies out of business. The manager of the Idaho State Automobile Association disputed the seriousness of the gasoline shortage, saying only 500 of the nations 220,000 gasoline stations are reported closed. Manager Ken Miller did point out some stations are open fewer hours each day and motorists should buy gasew line during the daytime hours. Although MJler says the shortage is not serious enough for motorists to carrel vacations, some of Idahos smaller stations are having difficulty getting enough gas and larger stations are being rationed by suppliers. The East Cleveland beverage store in Caldwell ran out of gas two weeks ago and Steve Bonde, manager, said he does not expect to get any for at least two months. In Shoshone, Idaho, the Texaco and Standard stations have been advised they will not be supplied any more gasoline than they received last year.
