We have rebuilt West Germany and Japan so that today much of their industry is more modern than our own. We have sta-- j tsoned troops around the world for 25 years at an enormous cost, thus freeing other tions from the expense defending themselves. Letters from our readers of A4 For decades our government has tried to commit suicide, regardless of the party in control. In recent years the tempo has increased. The tragedy of being on wefare To the editor: While at a clinic recently, I met a lady who was ill She could not get in to see a doctor, for if you are on welfare, it means a lot less out of their pocket and too much paper work. I dropped her off to the hospital emeigency to get help. Later, this same lady called me and told me the man who handled the Temporary Disability at welfare took her check away without offering any other source of income to replace it. She filled out papers, f went into welfare to talk to the man in charge of Temporary Disability. He told me there was nothing for her. But, we could get a doctors statement that she was disabled, and come back and they would immedlatly get a Repeal the moral code ? To the editor: KenIn your March 8 edition, letter-write- r neth Bresui takes the view that legislation or a moral code which seeks to repress or control prostitution, drug traffic, gambling, etc. should be repealed or ignored. He seems to feel that all such controls should be taken away, leaving every person to judge and act as he sees fit. Let us extrapolate from this thesis to its logical extremes: We should, therefore, repeal or ipore those must be inrules which say that guard-rail- s stalled on highways or that contractors must build fences so that I cannot walk to the edge excavation. and peer down into a attractive public nuisances as marijuana or heroin pushers or filthy book stores are not to be controlled, why should I be forced to build a fence so the neighbors children will If such bawdy-house- s, not wander into my back yard and fall into my swimming pool? After all, the neighbors children are not forced to be involved in such activity. And if my neighbor desires to appear in, public in the pude, w! y should I seek to control such activity by legislation? The fact that she thus becomes an attractive public nuisance to members of the opposite sex has no bearing on the matter, since we are bound to repeal or ignore all such rules. Bresm misunderstand, Lest letter-write- r let me make it perfectly dear that I do not agree with his point of view and that I believe our organized society has not only a right but an obligation to legislate controls, and that we as citizens have an obligation not to ignore such rules when they seem to conflict with our personal philosophy. I must have more faith in humanity than to believe that this is the will of the majority. Why innuendo on cheap guns? To the editor: Cant think for the life of me why the staff writer, the author of Outlaw Cheap Guns, would want to so write. I Wonder if it is simply rhetoric in print or if he is so naive that the thinks crime will be curbed if it should be possible to outlaw guns in this constitutional republic. I am a little reticent to take on" a professional journalist who is officially writing for this fine paper, but is it possible that he is not mindful of the constitutional right of the people to own and bear arms in this country? And innuendo about why the cheap guns? Doesnt this gentleman know that if guns are cheap (does he mean inexpensive or poor quality) or exbanned or not pensive, banned, a criminal will get them if he has to steal or smuggle them? Do we need to remind him of Northern Ireland and Hungary? itF Is this how we teach our young people to be good, responsible citizens? Can we build a strong nation with people who are taught that they dont have to be responsible for there actions? A weak society in any sense cannot survive. If the Supreme Court is not concerned with morals, then perhaps they should consider other repercussions of this decision. Is society so afraid of overpopulation that we are going . to resort to mass murder? For women who do not want children, this is decision theirs. But there are contraceptives (and more permant means) on the market which will cause a great deal less side-effec- ts than abortion. Performing an abortion, (as casually as one might have a tooth pulled) simply because bringing a child into the world, would be an inconvience cannot be justified. EASY TO USE 4 KRS proposed budget and that it will be difficult to sell to Congress However. I have been stunned to learn that he is not even waiting for Congress to be sold on the idea. He has made numerous decisions on his own and has put them mto action without any advice, let alone consent, from the legislative branch of government. Governmental agencies and programs all over the country have been given a few months to close down and funding is being stopped. Hopefully, the intention is right; but the method is frightening. Is it even legal for one man to unilaterally do away with programs previously set up by Congress and approved by the Fresident? The Presidency has become too powerful if such powers now reside therein. The President mav propose governmental changes, but he should first provide our elected representatives m Congress the opportunity to act on his proposal. If the Congress disagrees with the President, he can fall back on h:s veto power and the Congress can fall back on ,ts power to ovemde a veto. We might agree with the need for a particular action, but what President is infallible? Let us not have any man in this nation wuh the power to unilaterally abolish an agency or program! Where would it end? CAROL TYLER OVERLAND PARK, KN. fi, j |
