united states prosecuting attorney attey for utah which in the opinion of many prominent and influential citizens of this territory jy calls ealis for a reply as it is replete with incorrect statements and erroneous colorings and is well calculated to create in the public minot mind impressions that are wrin wron wrong g and very uhl unjust to a cices class of 0 people who constitute the overwhelming majority of the population ol 01 utah notwithstanding that the inter ocean hes has not in the tha past shown any special friendship for the mormon mony mons people and notwithstanding the surprise Dylse of mr van zile that you should have admitted into your columns a few fa favorably navo favo rabla nabie words respecting them themy or lather rather criticising criticizing critic ising we the position course and find purpose of a certain of non mormons cormons it is earnestly hoped that inasmuch f as you gave pince place to mr van ziles communications you will admit to your columns a reply THE REPLY tho the Inter ocean stated in its article which ia is tho the subject of mr sir van criticism that with many of f tile the Gent gentiles liess iless the destruction of polygamy is not so much sought as the expulsion of the mormons cormons Mor mons ay and that they the Klen gentiles tilo twani twant to roam tho the 1 land get the best of mormon industry developed dev elope the mines and otherwise acquire the wealth which nature and industry have accumulated in that portion of the coun try 21 notwithstanding that mr van zile zue charges the inter ocean with having reproduced the mormon mormon Mor mon moa war cry in printing this statement it ia Is the truth simply and briefly told mr van zile is the nominee for delegate to congress Con grebb grese and the chosen standard bearer of the clas class 43 of gentiles in utah who 80 so loudly and persistently accuse the mormons cormons of disloyalty nullification and immorality and who pretend to be working to bring the mormons cormons under tinder subjection to the laws As a matter of fact thera thero ia Is not a section of the entire union where the laws of congress and the local legislature are more profoundly res respected acted and strictly observed than in in utah and in no community of similar numbers within the limits of the republic are there fewer violations of law than in utah notwithstanding the alleged diere gard of the acts of congress which prohibit polygamy THE UNIVERSAL TESTIMONY of fair minded and observing travelers and tourists who pass through utah is that the mormons cormons are exceptionally law abiding peaceable quiet non contentions and industrious and as to their moral status they will challenge comparison compari son aon with any community of similar size bize in jn the world in respect to temperance honesty ho nesty neaty frugality industry and any other quality that goes to make a good and useful citizen mr van exclaims why ya sir bir the gentiles in utah are t he the men and women who for these years have been the spartans spartano Spar tans in the pass pas and who have kept back this band of rebels and defended the government and its laws against this host single handed and alone for years they have stood in the breach and tile the mines of utah would today have been undeveloped had it not been for the industry and persistent efforts of tho the gentil gentilee Gen tilea ca the meaning intended to bo be conveyed by mr van zile in the foregoing goi gol ng paragraph is not quite clear A literal construction of his language I 1 would imply that the government and its I 1 laws aws have at some time been imperiled by the mormon host and that the gentiles or utah nave have stood forth in their defense but the idea of the government being 11 IN 4 DANGER FROM THU THE MORMONS is too utterly preposterous to be advanced by a man of mr van ziles intelligence he probably designs to convey the impression that the interests of property or both of the government in utah and also its lawes lawis have been attacked threatened or imperiled by the mormons cormons Mor mons ahn whatever bever his meaning in this paragraph may be it ia Is doubtless intended as a charge of disloyalty against the cormons mormons Mor mons farther on in his letter is reiterated in a manner that proves that in mr van ciless heart there rankles an intense animosity ant toward the mormon people and their religion this charge of disloyalty made by mr van zile against tho mormon people is a favorite theme of hi hie ho he repeats it further farther on in his hia letter in these words 1 I have always and do now contend that no man can adopt the mormon doctrines and teaching of the leaders and be a loyal man such ia is mr van ziles committal of himself in his letter to the infer inter ocean but in the political platform upon which he elands aa as the nominee of the anti mormon party in utah for delegate to congress he makes a warm appeal to I 1 the loyal and independent mem bars of the mormon church 1 to support him and the cause he represents abroad he denies the possibility of loyalty among the mor mons but when beeking seeking votes hi in utah he appeals to the loyal mid and inde independent adent mormons cormons Mor mons mona for their su suf frages suffrages reel J thus stultifying himself M mr r van an zile ought to know as well as one man can know tho the feelen feelings and sentiments that are fostered in in the hearts of his fellows follows that nowhere ON ALL alili THE FACE PACE UP or THE EARTH do the stana stars and stripes float flout over hearts more truly and reverentially loyal to the constitution laws and institutions of our oun government than I 1 are those hearts that also aho charlah a solemn god fearing faith in the disloyalty eo so often made against the mormons cormons Mor mons not only by mr van zile but by other and speakers we will cite a few facts from history who first planted the stars and stripes among the tops ol 01 the mounta mountains hig his in the heart of the then great american desert these disloyal dia loyal mormons cormons Mor mons when in the blistering heat of the july bun sun in th the a year 1847 tho the mormon pioneers a band of weary and footsore pilgrims just justsen bet set foot upon the site of their now beautiful beau tifai capital almost their first act was to unfold the flag taking possession F of it in la the name of their country how came california that em am piro of wealth to the nation ll 11 to be saved from occupation reoccupation re by the mexicans or perhaps falling into the possession of great britain the honors is I 1 justly DUE TO THE MORMON BATTALION BATTA natta iiron who under colonel P st george cook an officer of the united states army marched to fear of mob violence these men meo with their core co re had a few weeks previous to their enlistment been driven by mob violence from their beautiful homes and possessions in their city of nauvoo on mobbing plundering alund and d driving from their homes the mormons cormons in missouri and 1111 iiii illinoia noia nola reached utah ulah in ina lna a destitute condition conditions en an route for the land of gold was it a mark of disloyalty and inhumanity in the mormons cormons to feed and administer to the wants of these emigrants out of their own scanty store was it a mark of disloyalty when in the year 1870 at the dictum of the governor of utah the mormons cormons ceased their military drills drius he forbade the assembling together of more than ten men even for the purpose of celebrating independence dayon for any other object whatever ahn ve r notwithstanding the constitutional guarantee that the right of the peo plo to bear arms shall not be infringed never was the loyalty of the people of any portion of this republic so severely tested as has haa been that of the mormon people bract by act of congress perhaps of them have been disfranchised franchised dis and denied the right to hold office and by the extra judicial course ot of the federal courts here hero mormons cormons who will not repudiate their religion are being excluded from J cries hence accused mormons cormons are being indicted and tried by juries of avowed hostility to them theral rather than by impartial juries of their peers pears to all this the cormona are quietly submitting patiently awaiting en an opportunity to test in the supreme court of the united states the laws and judicial rulings that thus rob them of their rights it Is safe to bay eay that the freeborn free born american citizens of no other portion of the united states would eo so quietly and patiently submit to such outrageous invasion of their most sacred rights lights with loyalty to the goy gov fqy gov emment and the constitution the mormons cormons AM arbi NO to these attacks upon their liberties except in tho the courts courte by methods methods a most strictly legal and aad constitutional to what circumstance or to what act or sentiment santi banti ment of the mormon people can mr van zile point as a sign eign token or evidence of their disloyalty not one why then this reiterated charge the object of it is plain once make it appear to the satisfaction of congress that the mormon people in utah are disloyal and the entire control of the territory with its offices treasuries and public trusts would pass into the hands of the insignificant minority hence their interest and zeal in making and trying to establish the charge rhe fhe only ground whatever thit can afford the slightest pretext for the charge of disloyalty against the mormon people is the alleged disregard of some of them for the laws jaws of congress which prohibit polygamy it is not our purpose to avoid replying to a single point made by mr van zile so far as space will permit hence we give a frank stat statement ement of the attitude of the mormon people respecting the practice of polygamy y and the laws of Con congress grabs grass which prohibit it the doctrine of plural marriage is 19 a vital principle of the religion of the tle mormon people and they always maintained that the law of 1862 1662 forbidding ib it wa v as unconstitutional as it prohibited THE FREE FEES EXERCISE OF THEIR RELIGION in the tha Reynolds case the supreme court of the united states affirmed the constitutionality of that law to that decision the mormon people have bowed and the announcement has been made by the mormon church and aud by its official lelal off omm organ that hereafter any man who vl violates the anti polygamy law does it on his own responsibility and may expect the punishment prescribed by the law aw but while thus submitting to fine and jm imprisonment for his religions sakes sake the mormon knows that the rig nights rights hag of conscience have been invaded and he awaits with such patience patie n ca as he baythe day when his motives and religion will not be eo so grossly misunderstood by the world and the government and whan when gho the rights of conscience will not bo be denied the citizens of this republic mr van zile refers to 99 the murders that have been committed committe d in utah in a manner to conn connect cc t with and make responsible for them the mormon people it is true there havo have been tragedies and murdena murders in utah but in none of the present territories of the united states in p proportion ro portion to the number of their P population and the length of time t hey they have been sett bett settled have there b been een fewer homicides than in uth utah though that shocking horrifying tragedy THE aOUN tin MEADOWS mea XEA DOyS be included in the account against thib territory the facts are that in the early days of not one of the western states or territories have there been so few crimes against human life as in utah and in none has the law been so effectual for tho the preservation of life and property if in the tragedies that have occurred the guilty have not been brought to justice the fault was wag not that of the mormons cormons Mor mons for the court machinery and prosecuting authority has been in the hands of non Mormon federal appointees during nearly the whole history of the territory the mountain naca raca meadows dows tragedy though not designated by mr van zile was evidently in his mind and he will here make a brief reference to it the features of the tragedy are shocking in the extreme estremo and find its ferocity admits of no extenuation but the accusation of complicity in it so often made against brigham young and other leading mormons cormons Mor mons Is as baseless cruel and unjust as the tragedy was horrible salt lake city the home of brigham young and most of the leading men of the mormon deppie Is nearly miles from THE SCENE soene OF THE TRAGEDY A vast and desert wilderness destitute almost entirely of ready means of communication with but few settlements 2 intervened between the two points and nothing was known of the tragedy by brigham young or the other mormon leaders who were at their homes in salt lake until some time after it had occurred the news of the hor hot 7 affair spread rapidly among th thi mormon settlement creating a thrill of honor horror in coh con eluding our reference to this painton subject we will quote |
