Show jwy J 20 B p1 DESERET MOAB in Agriculture Moab Valley has been given a new burst of hope with the operation of a hydroponics plant. Ralph Miller Sr., recently retired from years of service as Grand County Combuilt the plant missioner, behind his home in Moab. Young tomato plants are set in rock chips (no soil) and are nourished by regulated flows of water. Miller expects the plants to be blooming within three weeks under ideal conditions of temperature, sunlight and nourishment. In other experiments, each plant bears some 30 pounds of fruit during the three months before it is replaced. The 14 x 17 foot long hydroponics building, a metal framework covered with opaque white plastic sheeting, was initially planted with 320 tomato plants. Using conventional truck gardening procedures, this many plants would have required almost two acies of land pilot-size- nutrient-saturate- d like purposes, developments and retirement communities. Before the advent of the uranium boom, fruit orchards and truck gardens produced rich crops, but then lands were lost to housing, industrial and commercial development. This was followed by the development of other nearby mineral resources. The steady for other tounst-onente- d growth of tourism continued to erode the basis for the valleys agriculture, the rich bottom lands immediately surrounding the town of Moab. Although some new land to the south of Moab, m Spanish Valley, was being opened to agriculture, primarily cattle feed crops, by the 1970s the trend away from agriculture seemed inevitable. A pilot project has been established by the Grand and San Juan water conservancy districts to determine what types of crops can best be grown on the more and soils if sufficient water can be made available. d The building is maintained automatically at ideal growing temperatures by heating and cooling equipment, so that its growing season is 12 months a year. It is designed so that one person could care for three such buildings. No weeding or spraying is required Miller indicates that if his pilot operation is successful, he hopes to have 10 or fifteen more in operation within a year, and can thus provide tomatoes and other vegetables to the entire southeastern Utah area. 4 lingua Pilot Plant Gives Agriculture Hope To Moab Valley By FRAN BARNES M a NEWS, 'Vednesdoy, January 1 7, 1 573 Deseret News Correspondent p "f H 'Muir 1 ?HIk 1 V 1 1 M Vie 1 $534.95 Famous Bax, old world,9ua,!y,in sign.
