WOODWARD Deseret News Business Editor The mood of the people has changed, said Oakley Evans, former executive vice president of the J.C. Penney Co., in a remark that could sum up the glowing forecasts for Utahs economy this year. Evans made his remark in one of the sessions of the annual Business Forecast seminar at the University of Utah Thursday. It pretty well sums up the attitude of all participants: the state is in for another vintage year. Depending upon the try, the forecasts ranged from good to excellent as the Colindus- lege of Business hosted several hundred businessmen at the Student Union Building. Here are some of the highlights of the forecast, as developed .a in panel discussions concerning several areas: Personal consumption will lead the economy this year, instead of private investment, which led it in 1972, said Evans. Utah is in the later phases of its housing boom, and 1973 may see a period of leveling off. Housing, in fact, just finished a record year of 10,000 new units a pace that will not be sustained. Panelists forecast a drop of 20 percent, mainly due to a substantial reduction in F1I.V e 235 programs. Apartment vacancy rates may rise to the 10 or 12 level later this year. There will be 3,850 new units completed during the year double that of any previous year and way ahead of the long-teresti mate of policy for growth to manage our human resources, and natural resummed up Dr. sources, Thayne Robson. economy can support. One panelist referred to it as the growth of a state of mind in which he feels he is entitled to certain rights. Evans, in his panel discussion, said consumerism will reach a point where it will level off if retailers take it seriously, but they will ignore it at their peril. there steady, but after are some serious questions. 1975 Utah now faces a very strong growth rate of four to six percent a year in its economy, a rate that will cause serious problems unless adequate planning is begun.
