and able report by A 0 smoot chairman of the committee on wool and woolen manufactures it will be published at nt an early day in tho the hands of more morr secretary webber is a report on sit bit sait salt t furnished tarnished by W budge chairman of tho the committee on that subject which Is quite interesting te to especially in view of the saca fact 36 that it has been considered difficult to get that article of a kind suitable to its more delicate uses in this part of the country we hera here with present it REPORT 0 ON 14 galt GAIT to the president of the central board 0 of f trade salt lake city sim sin your committee on tho subject of salt have succeeded in obtaining an ans ana analytis anai anal lyals of the salt from near bear lake and of the liverpool salt and aiso also of 0 the waters of halt hait lake late which we respectfully submit tho the salt spring springs near bear nake lake where according to the report the best balt salt is found is ls actuated about 25 1 15 miles cant east of montpelier in bear lake county idaho and aro are capable if worked to advantage of producing three tons of salt every twenty four hours the road to the salt springs la Is not good but can be improved at comparatively little cost and salt halt can be delivered in montpelier at a cost coat of about 60 cents per pound we are pleased to present as a fact the superiority ol 01 salt found near home homo as it ia is important to procure at a cheap rate an ingredient that is eo so necessary in tho manufacture of butter and cheese rapidly growing industries sa as well as for household and many oher ocher purposes WM university OF RE SERET salt lafko lake city utah october 10 1881 the bor nor bear near B ar laka lake balt bait submitted to tid me for analysis gave the any y unpleasant sulphate of soda sods another ingredient of the bear lako salt is somewhat bitter and acrid and la Is probably bly found in sufficient quantity to impart a very slight blight bitter bitten taste to butter with which the balt salt is combined the sulphate eul phate of potassa ia is a nause gus ous and slightly bitter substance but exists in a very small quantity in the bear lake bait saif sy so that it could produce only a slight change in the normal flavor of butter in the liverpool balt bait the bitter substance chloride of magnesium and clorde of calcium are greater in quantity than the bitter substances found in the tle bear lake salt chloride of potassium in its properties Is much like chloride of f odium um yet if present in large quantities in common salt it Is very apt to injure ur 0 the flavor of butter in which such salt Is used the bitter substances exist in reater greater quantities in the solid matter or salt of salt lake water than in either the bear lake or the iriv liv balt salt in accordance with the abote above analysis of the salt from each of the ahrea places named the bear lake salt sait contains the least amount of bitter substances and although ii it contains a little of the most disagreeable odethe quantity isso Is so small that it is probably the beat of all for salting butter and for other family wes les the bear beat lake salt is not eo so clean as the liverpool it contains a little organic matter of which the tho liverpool is entirely free with a little care however in preparing the salt for use the organic matter could doubtless be eliminated and the bear L lake ke salt be bd made as clean eiban as an that hat of liverpool JOS T chemist in deseret university |
