To know Blake is to know a person that thinks he is right all the time. But poor Marty must have been wrong sometime this season. He doesnt the axe as the 5L?va Jb anymore Blake Pittsburgh Condors president and general manager. He did everything he could to put people in the seats at Pittsburghs Civic Arena. He even gave ducats away ! But he couldnt find any takers or the cure for the apathy that prevails in the Steel City for pro basketball. Actually, it wasnt Martys fault. Pittsburgh was one of the original American Basketball Association franchises. And the Pipers (what they were tagged) couldnt draw crowds even when they were winning the championship (1967-68- ) with the great Connie Hawkins. The day after Hawkins and his gang won the ABA crown, the franchise was shifted to Minnesota. The club spent a year there before returning to Pittsburgh. But this time without the Hawk, who jumped to the Phoenix Suns of the NBA. The Apathy Remained Athletic meet was staged in Salt Lake City. The two-dameet produced champs in everything from to to baseball, wrestling, to volleyball and dancing, hammer throwing. But none of the events was more climactic the playoff for the first YMMIA basketball title. The meet pitted the eventufrom Hinckley, al winners Utah, representing the Deseret Stake, and a team from Preston, Idaho. The Hinckley group, John W. Wright, Cameron, Tex.: Clarence Bishop and Arthur Reeve, Salt Lake; Marvin J. Delta and the late Moody. John W. Greener, had only decided to travel the 150 miles to Salt Lake a few days before the meet. Center on the team, Arthur Reeve, recalls: We just upped and decided we wanted to go and compete. So we packed our make-shif- t uniforms and the five of us hopped a train to Salt Lake. than Coach Teetsel, Arthur Reeve, and John Greener. We didnt have substitutes in those days either. If a player went down, we stood him up, brushed him off and if he could stand, we continued to play. We didnt dribble much during our games It vas too slow. We just passed the ball around and waited for a shot, he recalled. The teams uniforms consisted of a home-mad- e jersey, There were only four teams entered and we beat the first team pretty easily as I recall. Preston was a little tougher though, he said. a pair baseball pants and a canvas shoes. pair The team's rooting section for the final meet was made up of three ladies. All total, there were over 500 athletes competing in the first YMMIA meet which was billed as interesting and attended by large crowds. Hes the fighter, if you want to call him that, from Cut N Shoot, Texas, who fought Floyd Patterson for the heavyweight championship. Well anyway, I was dowr. in Texas doing a story on Harris for Argosy Magazine and he tipped me off about Beaty. Blake was the type of general manager who didnt believe in paying the price tag that some college players are asking these days. The proving grounds for basketball is playing pro basketball, Marty continued. With the type f scheduling and rough play in pro basketball, some college players cant cut the mustard. I knew Beaty could. But do you want to know what I paid him? (Marty was going to tell me whether I wanted to know or not!) I paid him $10,000; $12,000; $14,000 and $17,000 in his first four years. But he learned his trade. Maybe, that is a clue why the Hawks lost him. They were not paying The Man enough loot. Another thing, continued Marty, when you look at his statistics for his first couple of years, it is a little misleading. He played with two great ones, Bob Pettit and Cliff Hagan, and they werent giving up the bail. Everything that he got, he earned on his own. M-M- it to me. We always kept a man down under our basket arid I threw it the full length second only to the Boston Celtics in losing 494 TBA history. A Jot of people run when they see him coming, because he just loves to bend an ear. In a way, some times he makes sense. You see that guy out there, Blake pointed out to this writer during the Pittsburgh-Lta- h game at the Civic Arena, in referring to Zelmo Beaty. People thought I was nuts when I drafted him No. 1 ont of the 1961-6- 2 NBA draft. But Frank Robinson has been grooming himself as a manager and has done a great job. He will become highly successful if given the chance. Robinson, who says some of his defensive gems "aren't as difficult as they look. admitted Monday night that he was surprised to win the S10.000 Hickok Award. This tops it all off, he said. The City had the baseball Pirates, football's Steel ers, and hockeys (NHL) Penguins to worry about plus the colleges. Dont feel sorry for Marty. He has the last laugh on the Pittsburgh franchise. Blake was only in his first year of a five year $50,000 (per year) contract. And these days hes laughing all the way to the bank.
