Ne.s James Drury, star of Men From Shiloh (formerly The "Virginian;, has changed his personal image. Where he used to be a difficult interview and was known as television's silent man. he now is talkative and even makes provocative statements. He recently became extra interesting to Utahns when he was named an officer in a corporation developing an area in northern Utah. Drury believes any talent he might have in drama was partly the result of misfortune and partly due to his mother. I was paralyzed with po,:o when I was 6 years old, he says. It lasted eight months. I couldnt move my hands or anything. Mo, her would read t poetry and plays to us kids. I had to memorize the words and this made me a quick study. Drury made his acting debut when he was 8 years old. At the Greenwich ViHouse in llage Settlement New York, he played Herod. I wore a beard, he laughed in recalling the Mother literally kicked me on the stage. I was shy and didnt want to go on. I found I liked acting and Ive enjoyed it ever since. You had a reputation for being a difficult interview a couple of years back, we noted. Youve changed. How event. year are assessed. one of the best horseto ride when he was in Oregon. on violence on televicut out scenes of vioabout the move, he He generally is credited with being men on television because he learned four years old. His family had a ranch He is still unhappy about the curb sion. When television first decided to lence, more than a year ago, I raved said. It infuriates me that TV, and Westerns in particular, is being blamed for the violent nature of Americans. This country has always been violent, assassinations have occurred since the dawn of history. I havent shot a man on this show in nearly two years. Theyre taking my tools away . . . The western is a morality play; it shows that good triumphs over evil. I think well have realism again. He was a doctor who decided w hich persons in a small community should live and which should die. Some were incurably ill; others just stood in the way of what might benefit the community, in terms of what he wanted. Into his life comes his protege, also a dotcor, who disto covers Bing is weeding out those he deems undesirable him. The protege then becomes undesirable and Bir.g decides to get rid of him and almost does in a predictable finale. The play had suspense, but Bing is no villain.- The Ratings The ratings by Nielsen had Marcus Welby in first place and Medical Center in second, which means viewers could be getting more doctor shows next year. Welby is in first place for the season so far, having wound up on top most of the time. John Waynes special, Swing Out, Sweet Lard, has been third so far, and the Lucy Show with the Burtons has been fourth. That Storefront Lawyers, the CBS series that hasnt done much in the ratings this season, will be revived with a more Standard weekly program about attorneys. Its title will be changed to Men At Law. A complete inside story of Scotland Yard will be told in The Yard has given a special scheduled by NBC-Tpermission for cameramen to show settings never before seen on TV.
