Ballard, president of Deseret Pharmaceutical today that Co., announced consolidated net sales were $3,345,000 for the first quarter of fiscal 1971, that ended Nov. 30, 1970. Ballard stated thatt the first quarter operating results represent the best first quarter in the company's history and indicated that the company was well on its way to achieving the previously cast $1 per share earnings for the fiscal year ending Aug. 31, 1971. In the first quarter ended Nov. 30, 1970, net sales were $3,346,000; net inccme before taxes was $483,000; net come after taxes $242,000; earnings per share 20 cents. In the first quarter 1969, net sales were $2,526,000; income before taxes $16,000; income after taxes $16,000; earnings per share, one cent; extraordinary loss, four cents. Subsidiaries Fined In Magazine Case DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) Five subsidiaries of Cowles Communications Inc. were fined $10,000 apiece in federal court after they Monday pleaded "no contest" to criminal charges of mail fraud. District Court Judge Roy Stephenson also issued a permanent injunction against the five and against the parent company, forbidding any further use of allegedly fradulent sales and collection practices in connection with magazine subscription sales. Fifty counts were contained in a criminal information filed Monday by the Jusuce Department after a three-yea- r study of the selling practices by postal inspectors. Fined in the action were these Des Moines--b Home Cowles subsidiaries; Reference Library, Inc.: Home Readers Service, Ine.; Mutual Readers League Ine.; Civic Reading Club, Inc.; and Educational Book Club Inc. In addition to the criminal charges, a civil suit was filed which sought the injunction. Thee harges were against only the subsidiaries, but the parent company was named in the civil suit. The five were charged with having engaged in fraudulent and deceptive subscription practices for more than five ased years.
