Either precaution would substantially eliminate the apparent margin of error which the AEC is now operating under. Pendleton said as long as the AEC is spending so much money anyway for nuclear testing, why dont they spend enough to make it safe? The two he recommendations, said, would raise cost of tests about 25 percent. Pendleton also questioned the need to test every minor change in nuclear development." The resulting buildup in radioactive iodine, cesium and strontium could be dangerous for years, he said. Cesium and strontium in particular can carry long distances and have been found in remote mountain areas of eastern Utah in alarming amounts since the major testing of 1962. Tests performed on rabbits and deer during the past two days show the amount of radiation that escaped last Friday is not dangerous, he said, but . . . the accident does prove the need for greater precautions. Such radioactivity has in past instances throughout the world been blamed by physi cians for leukemia and other forms of cancer. Pendleton said fallout danger might have been greater during the summer months. Fallout then would possibly contaminate pasture lands over the state where cows are feeding, and pass along the radioactivity to us. While it does not appear that any such danger exists from the last fallout over Utah, we are still testing. . Another - thing we have learned from tne repeated testing in Nevada is that Utah is downwind, and could take the brunt of any future acci- - January 7, 197i Aide U. dents just as the state did in the last one. Pendleton emphasized that the AEC has cooperated with the University of Utah in many ways, and that techni cians from the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory at the University of California have contributed substantially to our radiological research here.
