notice meeting convened at 2 pm after the usual opening exercises resident president lareen larsell object of the meeting on that day was to organize a belief society and gave those present especially sisters bisters emma leonard and mary E cox her counselors sister bister anna johnson secretary and sister eliza J avery treasurer after which the speakers were president Pred dent larsen and Ille was a county convention conventional at castle dale at which hon C 0 larsen was chosen to represent emery county in the state conseil tut ional convention to be held in salt balt lake city april 10 1682 E eilas elias ilas lias cox was elected his alternate the following preamble and resolutions was introduced in the convention convent conven tien len by win wm howard and after being slightly amended was unanimously aper approved roved by said convention whereas there where are now pending in the congress of the tha united states several bills having for their object the persecution and disfranchisement of a large majority of the people of the territory of utah commonly called mormons cormons Mor mons and ana some portions of said bill not only strike at the religious and political freedom cf the latter day alnas i a right that is as dear deaz to them as etever it ever has been or ever even will be to any of the people ot of tho the united states but also at the constitution cf of the country in which we live an instrument ment we hov hol hud 14 to be sacred and beyond the power of congress Con gress greas to make laws in conflict withas article I 1 of the he amendments to the constitution expressly declares that con coa grass shall make no law i respecting en an establishment of religion or prohibiting hi biting the free tree exercise thereof and whereas reasi some parts of said bill are bills of att attains attal attai aind nd er depriving the people of their lust rights without due process of 01 law jaw while article five of the amendments to the constitution declares beclar that no person shall be hed beld to answer for a capital or otherwise infamous crime unless oa on presentment or indictment of a grand jury is norbe nor be deprived of life liberty or property without due process of 0 law and article bix six of the amendment kryssin bays says in all criminal prosecutions the accused shall enjoy the right night to a speedy triai trial byan by an impartial juny jury of the state and district wherein the crime shall have been committed which district shall have been beell previously ascertained by law and be informed of the nature and cause of whereas the edmunda edmunds bill lately passed by congress deprives us of these rights inasmuch as it takes from us our liberty libertz and property which we hold bold in the tho e right to vote at any election held ta in the county city or precinct in which we live and perhaps our lives without due process of law jaw and inasmuch as we hold as dear as life the privilege llego to worship god according to the dictates of our own consciences tand jand and what we know to be right and also the right to speedy trial by impartial fur jur yule yUie night right to be informed odthe of the nature of the crime held against us and the right to be confronted with the witnesses against us and also the right of counsel for our defence and whereas our people in other more favored parts of the territory have availed themselves of the privilege of sending petitions to congress protesting against the enacting of ful measures and asking congress to send a commis commission alon of honorable men to utah to examine into its affairs that they thay may way ba be properly informed of the condition of the people of utah which is greatly exaggerated ger id for thel worse woree by a small chato
