The problem in the original company was that it had three partners of equal authority. "We found that management by committee didn't work," said Gary Dansie, owner of Media Mill. Gerreld L. Pulsipher owns Concept Design and James F. Peters Communication operates - , As- three are heavily involved in what government agencies have labeled "interpretive media." They do studies, research, planning, drsigning and fabricating of exhibits for a variety of federal sites. These include national park visitors' centers, dams and museums. Each handles a specific area of the total project and, frequently, a project. they Peters, whose staff consists of himself and one other person, handles studies of the people who will be visiting the site to determine what their interests are. "If we determine that 80 percent of the visitors are likely to be little old ladies, we might recommend campfire lectures as the best means of interpreting the site to them," he explained. In other instances, heavy use by school groups might be a factor that would call for a different treatment in the communications project. The reasons people want to visit the site is another factor studied. Pulsipher, on the other hand, is concerned with all the resources at the site that are to be interpreted or communicated to visitors. "We look at the audience, the setting, concepts and subject matter to be communicated such as ecological and technical aspects," he explained. re joint-ventu- ' s v self-guid- ::: ,,;,,,,-- :...:,,:,, ,,. ,,2.: ,:.. .., - ' ::7::::):::: :"''::::: :':"::::::: l': :...:::::.: i'..; ' .?'., ,,".5' .: :: :::: ?:':,:::::::r''::7-,r- ::, ,.'.;!: :: :, 1 ':'.;'. low ,A ''.4:,,,.. f i 1 i ,. ::: r ,,,::: .,:j: V:, :'''' :4 ::: :,;::,':: !::,,,':.::::: completed are Recently ...:1: .,'':"';,;-:- ::::::: r''' , ''.::?..: '.:: .!.': :::: ..". :., , ........-.- ': ,.:,..... , 41 t it ':::::'::::::::::! Jot reminders on the calendar to check tire inflation pressures at least every two weeks on the stored vehicle. For storage over extended periods, put the vehicle up on blocks and decrease pressures to half the normal level. This will prolong the life of the tires. The engineers recommend that the rear tires on a towing vehicle be inflated to the maximum indicated on the sidewalls of the tires to increase potential. load-carryi- A ure expert should be consulted to make sure tires are of the proper size and load range (ply rating) to support the added weight when carrying extra heavy loads. If you buy a standard pickup truck and camper back separately, weigh the combined unit to make sure the tires on the truck aren't overloaded by the added weight. The three tomed the nrigirgal company, Exibigraphics, soon after it was started as a sideline by Ralph Reynolds. The business grew to the point where it no longer could be basis, so managed on a part-tim- e Reynolds sold out to the trio working with him. After trying the "management by committee" idea for a time, the three agreed to divide the company into its three profit centers, each taking over the one in which his interests lay. Thus, in 1972, the three companies were formed. They have grown in profitability beyond the level of the original firm. Peters said the combined gross of the three now 0 runs between a year. These could include exhibits, audio-visudisplays or trail hikes whatever could do the job best. A plan is then formulated to accomplish the de- sired communication. "We'll carry through the final design and working drawings and specifications if the contract requires," Pulsipher said. Media Mill takes it from there, producing the signs, models, displays, photographs or whatever might be required to actually do the communicating. e When the three firms a project, they do so under the name Consortium West. For- merly, they used the name of the original company, Exhibigraphics, but soon decided that was. not suitable for the broad scope of their activities. "We do a lot of traveling," said Dansie, noting that most of the production of the three firms is exported to other states., Indeed, Concept design is now planning and designing the communications for a national park in Saudi Arabia, the first such facility in that country. The U.S. National Park Service actually is in charge of this project, with Concept Design serving in a consulting role. Media Mill may be brought into the project later. Other projects currently under way include the Red Rocks Visitors' Center near Gallup, N.M.; St. Louis Zoo; Minnesota Zoo; Lewis and Clark Caverns, and the Union Pacific Depot Museum and Browning gun collection in Ogden. p? a '''".o.'
