Show industrial the condition so ably described in the following editorial from the utah state journal ogden has in invaded ded even remote industrial communities we regard it worthy of earnest consideration industrial UNREST for several years the country has been enjoying the highest degree of prosperity pio never before has there been so many enterprises undertaken by public and private capital on so large a scale there has been work tor for the skilled and work for the unskilled at better wages than ever before recorded but a wave of unrest has swept over the country and in spite of the prosperity prevailing the tramp winders wanders abroad men are arc idle from choice and crime is rife in the land here is a problem for the political economist these things are usually supposed to be in the wake of hard times and general poverty why do 10 we find them existing under exactly the opposite conditions the antitrust anti trust crusade has had much to do with in ginging about present conditions the people have learned what they did not know or at most only guessed at before that certain combinations under the protection of the law were and are now in defiance of publicity preying upon society the conservative element clement had no feeling against legitimate capital capita but when it was conclusively shown that in countless instances the returns from corporate capital were ou out ot of all proportion to capital invested and that methods not less questionable than those of tile the highway robber had been used by the so called captains of industry confidence in our industrial system was shaken to its foundation in the matter of dealing with the trusts and combinations in restraint of trade the country Is facing a crisis ultra radical action might demoralize the industries of the country and precipitate a panic before readjustment could take place while inaction will try the patience of the people beyond the enduring point only in conservative action toward tile the accomplishment of a definite aim is there hope |
