tube the call for the meeting after which the chairman stated that a motion for the celebration eb ration of the he of july 1881 was in order whereupon mr john T odne arse and faid paid for the sake eake of testing this matter I 1 move that it is the thu bense benso cf this meeting that thu tho citizens of salt lake city citi celebrate tho the approaching ath of or july and that we do it in a manner that will be worthy of the occasion the motion having been duly seconded mr ilaine caine calne continued inasmuch as the tile motion lias has been seconded I 1 will say that I 1 am in favor of celebrating the anniversary of the nations birth because upon that day years ago the rights and liberties of mankind were acknowledged and proclaimed to the world on that day was given to the world that instrument which among other things declared that all men were created equal that they were wore endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights among which were ilfe life liberty and the pur pursuit ault sult of happiness I 1 believe that these are the most important political principles that have ever been advanced to the children of men and of greater importance to them than any other proclamation that has been made save and except the plan of life lire and salvation I 1 believe we should celebrate the anniversary of that day that we should hould t teach our children to appreciate what the forefathers of this country countis did in declaring these things that they may realize the tho blessings and great benefits which were destined to flow to the nations then unborn I 1 believe we should celebrate that day that we may show bilow to our friends who come from the old world the great blessings of liberty which were bestowed upon the human race in the declaration made on that day for these reasons and for many others which might bo be set forth but which I 1 do not wish to take up your time in speaking cing clug upon now 1 iam lam am in favor of celebrating the fourth of july in a good rousing old fashioned style sty ie applause the chair chairman mail then put the motion to the meeting which was unanimously ni carried mr air george goddard then called for three cheers for the celebration which were hear heartily tf ay given HON hox Q CANNON next arose and said lu in order that this occasion may bo be properly celebrated and that it may be conducted in an orderly and gratifying manner to every one I 1 move that a committee be appointed to take charge of the exercises exercises and to arrange a pro gramme of proceedings and I 1 embody in my motion that the chairman of this meeting nominate this committee the motion having been duly seconded general B R T burton suggested a speech from the hon jelon georce georee Q Can cannon setting forth his ideas of a good fashioned celebration stirring music having been played by the sixth ward sunday school martial band MB bin CANNON stepped forward and said mr chairman and fellow citizens I 1 am heartily ic in accord with the idea that has been suggested that we have a celebration on this coming ath of july I 1 feel as thou though 0 ii I 1 wanted it not for my own sake so much as for the sake of my children and the children of our community I 1 think there is no people on this broad continent of ours who have so much interest in the celebrating of the ath of july and the maintaining of everything connected with tho the declaration which has made that day so memorable as the people of this territory there is every reason why we should keep up this day and its ts memory we have the largest interest estin jn maintaining the recollection of the deed deeds of the menalio men who participated in the framing of that declaration cl and who proclaimed it to the world and afterwards maintained it by their wise counsels and by the strength of their arms I 1 have never for a moment felt like allowing the recollection of this to pass away and to fade from our memories and the minds of our children it is true that there are causes wh which ich h have ave opera operated ted f to 0 make us feel to some extent during the past two or three years an indifference in regard to the formal celebrating 0 of this day causes which I 1 need not allude to upon this occasion as you are all familiar with them and those who have long resided here remember nl doubtless with great pleasure the chai chal character nacter of the celeb celebrations ta donson of this day which we have often participated in the pleasure we have had llad on thase these occasions ns when all the people have joined in the general rejoicing and as was suggested i by the gentleman who ma made de the motion to celebrate the day in a good old oid fasli fashioned boned style this suits my feelings fee linga exactly I 1 do not care so much about parades and processions professions process ions the firing of cannon and the burning of po powder ader as I 1 do about the tiie whole of the tho people turning out to participate in the exer aises or ceremonies whatever they may be ou on such an occasion there have been anniversaries of tha great day when we have hade bade had haq ex cee delightful associations I 1 T well remember in the year lsna 18 when our people who were in tue the valley assembled under the shade of a large bowery that was erean erected somewhere on the temple block bioc bloc lr and the stran strangers 0 ers a good many of whom were passing through at the time that thai being the first year of the california emigration a all ali I 1 I 1 w were e ro I 1 invited nv led t to shan share with the tho citizens in partaking of the bounteous repast which they hau bag provided it was a day long to be remembered and I 1 do not think it 8 will bo be forgotten by any one wh participated therein and I 1 do noi not see why we should not have anotle another just such celebration on this coming fourth of july without distinct distinction 04 of creed without distinction of party when wilen people ean can come comet tn gether as citizens of the tiie nation for getting for the moment any dafler ances which may exist in politics politIC 8 or of even religion we ought to meet on an occasion like this as citizen citi zeni ofa of a common country feeling thach f ia alfor for the blessings have to handed down to us by the patho of the republic for myself I 1 har hav but one feeling in regard to tt fourth of july and in regard to tot b declaration of independence cotie cetie t instrument framed and procla izil to the world and for the CU ca aution which followed its A B cl mation cla cia a few years te wards I 1 feel grateful to know t L that there were men found east so heroic a mould who had the he and courage and strength streng necessary to make that jodain tion to the world and then to mala maia tain it as they did until it became success until today to day it ia is embalms imperishably in the hearts of in mii mid lions never to fade from the memory of man but its ita remembrance I 1 go down to remotest posterity vh who too will share in the blessings luif anif benefits that flow I 1 feel that of all the lel yea F pie who live in this land t thos cl who dwell in theo thee mountha should be the last to forget the w rl flees which these heroes made road effi ti of all others should remember tia tha deeds and teach our children toh or the occasion as long as the I 1 public shall endure or as longasz longas government shall exist based the principles embodied in that thai 11 cred instrument the i the united states I 1 think myself that because some little feelings that may hai I 1 arisen through acts of DM met that might have been u c pleasant for UP at ti th time lime it would be unwise in us tot tod low such an occasion on as d dear ear to toi i at least as anybody else to be app appl by hy some few while some of us perhaps merel mere stand and look on I 1 think should give expression to the feel iii that animate us taking hold bold zeal and showing to all men are animated with a proper feelis in regard to this national day da evo inc ing not only to our fellow follow citizen but ilat to laigh heaven that we tt 0 thankful that the declaration of lofb b i dependence was proclaimed tod tot to til tir world that its principles hadeca have coir down to us and that w we have 1 I 1 privilege today to day of avowing ours cherence to them theland the mand and our deter nib tion to maintain them in the spi fidd in which they were given and I 1 hand them down to our poster ityl well preserved as they have llave cod cor cou down to us that they may proad to them unaffected by the acts acup men and in such a fl that they can take hold them and carry them out in their theirl and falness ful ness as we have it 6 deavo red to carry them out I 1 itari tid this is an occasion in which we el all participate and there are ph pid of ways in which we can celebrin we may not be able to fire CW cant or burn a great deal of powder we can show our feelings of ree rel res which shall shail be proper for them sion applause the band then played clymo 1 doodle the thy chairman appet app I 1 the fol foi following lowin committee aavo that we should have number of sub committees and I 1 would therefore suggest is 39 my name is down as chairman of ibe use general committee that this committee meet together ag as quickly as possible and arrange as to what pro ro gramme of proceedings shall be adopted for the occasion I 1 will state my own feelings in regard to the th e matter m atter which have arisen since the subject lias has been broached so soth that atall all ali present may know them kavo kave and if any have any other suggestions 0 there will be an opportunity of making them I 1 think it wil wll be good idea for the various wards through tigh out the city to get up local committees composed of active men and if it they choose to add ladies to the committees all right that they thuy may take hold of the matter in their on oft n wards now I 1 would like us to have a grand dinner hear hear let every man and anti woman in this region contribute to it in some sorn 0 shape get their own food ready a and d make maize general arrangements n to sit down and eat together to ether and if there are any strangers lers in i town invite them also Letus let us have bave good time just as fine a time as ae w can have without trespassing tres passing on lood order and if there are any fat axen oxen 1 I understand ono one gentleman das faas aas offered ered one we wo might have a genuine old fashioned barbecue roasting some oxen and sheep I 1 think this would be a grand idea now kow now there is the mill farm which the city council has lately purchased if we could only induce somebody to wait upon his honor the mayor at the council meeting to grant the people of this city the privilege of having a celebration in that new purchase I 1 think it would be a good place to llave have one we could arrange I 1 think for conveying the people there and we could if we choose pul put down dancing HOOTS erect swings arrange games and have everything necessary to make the day one of pleasure and rud enjoyment to everybody thom those ideas thema themselves elves tome to me since the matter has been broached others may have bave other suggestions to make but that is the way things appear tome to me I 1 see not liing to prevent rep this til s being the grandest occa bjon sjon we havo have ever had in this country if we will only take hold there thero asand la and has heen been a sort of feeling of indifference in regard to this matter in consequence of certain things which I 1 have incidentally alluded to without mentioning them but I 1 do not believe in sulking or forfeiting my privileges because some men may not have treated us as they ought to have done hear hear I 1 do not care about reverencing referencing reveren cing live men so much as I 1 do some of those dead heroes we vve can talk about john adams samuel adams thomas jefferson and others who foucht fought the battles of liberty and the gruits of their labors which have come down to us they have given us the liberty wo we enjoy today to day and which we will always contend for I 1 hope if it was my place to do so I 1 would move that ft a committee be appointed appon ted to wait upon the city council to ask them for the
