I paid Savant Co,, in Provo $240.92 for some storage (amJ last October. The check was cashed. They v I moved out without leaving a forwarding address. I efehtually talked to one of the principals and was assured 1 would hear about Dec. 10. 1 didn t and have not, I want my money back. Can you clear this up? Myl E.L.M., Ogden. !!Ve bought some food from a salesman representing Savant Co., of Provo last fall. The salesman called us finally and said he was having difficulty in getting the company to honor orders. Can you help us? R.H., Providence. We'll give you the story as we got it and our file a complaint with the advice. The latter first Utah Trade Commission, 330 E. 4th South, Salt Lake and it will take City. If anyone can unravel this time they are the ones. Now the story. Oificers of Savant Co., a marketing firm, approached a food storage business in Provo and wanted to purchase food for resale to individuals. The food people determined they had a bank account and salesmen. They came in with orders, paid cash and took the food presumably for delivery to customers. Things were fine for two months. Then the food dispensers began to get complaints of no deliveries. They contacted the SdVant people. They admitted to difficulties and promised to deliver. They did, we learned, make some delayed deliveries. Perhaps, you are next on their list. But dont count on it. The former president of Savant, we w'ere told, has agreed to be at the food storage business office in Provo every Friday between 9 and noon to take complaints. We suggest Provo, and see you call him at this number: what adjustments are in the making. vi hi J 2 DAYS AT THE BROADWAY FASHION PLACE SHOP FRIDAY 10 A.M. TO 9 P.M. SHOP SATURDAY 10 A.M. There are the Goombies I r .You saw on telebishion! - You look at the box. It looks more like a toy chest pyerflowing with magic top offers. And the cereal illustration has more chocolate than Kersheys. - Thoroughly revolted, you emit a strange sound, one your son has rarely heard: No. Determined to buy some nutritious cereal, you pick up a bran box that shouts, High Fiber Food." A second box says, New scientific observations now suggest that people with a continuing lack of sufficient fiber in their daily diets may have a higher occurrence of certain serious digestive disorders." TOMORROW'S Having heard a neighbor :pLLAR say high fiber foods can pre ?pnt bowel cancer, you plop the box into your cart. You did the right thing, right? '"Well, not necessarily. The Food and Drug Administration is investigating cereals that make therapeutic claims of disease prevention. The FDA says such claims are drug claims, and not your typical food promises. ,,One FDA staff member has warned that foods that' make drug claims without prior approval from FDA may be classified as misbranded drugs. ?i misbranded drug can be ordered off the market or seized by the government.) Its perfectly all right for a high fiber food to tell ypu;it contains great fiber content. But the brand cannot go on to say that its fiber content will prevent Specific diseases from occurring. Nor can it claim to prevent disease. '1 The FDA investigation was set off by Fresh a high fiber bread introduced by Horizon, Baking Co. Packaging and promotional And now there is increasing materials said, igutilic and medical opinion that fiber may even bfln prevent serious diseases." Although the claim was cleared by the Federal Trade Commission and tha food bureau of the FDA, . the FDAs drug bureau pounced on it as a "drug claim. had to redo both packaging and promotional materials to eliminate copy that linked high fiber content to disease prevention. In its defense, the company claimed it was saying things the cereal makers had been saying for years. With some embarrassment, the FDA haJ to admit it had been asleep In the cereal aisle. Rousing itself finally, the FDA decided it should investigate the therapeutic claims being advanced by certain cereal brands. In all likelihood, the therapeutic copy used by cereal makers will be ordered off the packages. (If a bread maker cant play doctor, how can the cereal maker?) What this means is obvious. You should not n assume that food products have powers regardless of what is claimed on some packages. You cannot assume that a food brand will be therapeutic for you unless one of two things happens: (1) Your doctor tells you a certain food has disease prevention capabilities; 2) a food maker clears a specific brand with the FDAs drug bureau And maybe one of these days, the FDA will get cereals around to labeling some of fhe.ngh-suga- r candy.
