Show 4 t DESERET NEWS, THURSDAY, JANUARY 13, 1977 First aid for budget Forgery suspected in Summa case Nev (UPI) Attorneys for Las Vegas publisher Hank Greenspun say someone may have forged the signature of Howard Hughes on a document submitted in a $142 million suit against Summa Corp., owned by the late Hughes. Attorneys met behind closed doors with District Judge Joseph McDaniel to present affidavits alleging a statement supplied the court was not actually signed by the reclusive billionaire. Lawyers for Greenspun said the matter was confidential and they could not talk about it in public. But later, Ralph Denton, an attorney for Greenspun, said in open court there should be sanctions imposed against Summa. We cannot sacrifice the judicial integrity and the honor of the state on the altar of expediency, said Denton, He said there was a false representation, apparently referring to the Hughes document ELXO If you're having the budget blues and the feeung that youll never make ends meet, take heart. A Guide to Budgeting for the Family, a revised US. Government publication, may be just what you need to get on top of the bills once again Youll be amazed at how much can be saved with small shifts in week Denton said he thinks if Judge McDaniel knew what was going on m connection with the document in 1974, he would have allowed attorneys to personally question Hughes. Lawyers for Greenspun weie only permitted to send written questions to Hughes who was living in the Bahamas at the time He sent a document to the court answering those questions At the time, Judge McDaniel refused the request of Greenspun's attorneys to take oral depositions from the billionaire. Denton complained that the whole case has been shrouded with a cloud of secrecy Lionel, however, said the affidavits presented to Judge Me Darnel have no bearing on the present case and amount to another attempt to try the case on anything but its merits. Denton said there are many ways sanction could be imposed against Summa The document in question is Hughes written answers to questions submitted by Greenspun attorneys In it, Hughes denies he ever had anything to do with the filing of a deed of trust on 2,300 acres of Greenspun property in Las Vegas That property is the basis for the slander of title suit. Greenspun contends the corporation wrongly filed the deed on the property, clouding his title to it and preventing him from developing the land He said that caused him to lose millions of dollars in potential profits. Summa attorney Samuel Lionel said there has been no showing the allegations in the affidavits are true The affidavits are being kept confidential for the time being, and it is not known whose statements they contain or the official allegations. Denton said, however, he may try to introduce them into evidence in the district court trial later this spending habits Send 35 cents to Consumer Information Center, Dept 81 E, Pueblo, Colo 81009.
