"We knew they were solid athletes, but even so, it takes experience under combat to mature them," Felt points oat. "We were fortunate to open against Kansas State, a teem that passes sparingly. That gave our secondary guys a, chance to get their feet on the ground and a game under their belts. They picked up soine needed confidence, played well in our second game against Colorado State; and have played progressively better sinee." Is the 1976 BYU secondary as strong as the fine defensive unit in 1974 that won the WAC and went to the Fiesta Bowl? "We're a little better in some areas and a little weaker in others, but overall we're as strong," answered Felt. "One thing for sure. All our athletes In the secondary, regular and reserves, have great attitudes and work hard." Hernandez leads BYU in return yardage at 73, about 15 yards per grab. Right corner Craig Jensen and weak linebacker Larry Miller each have four interceptions. Next test for the Cougars, against Texas El Paso Saturday in Provo (1:30 p.m. kickoff) isn't expected to be severe. On second and 10, ASU quarterback Dennis Sproul threw to his favorite target, Larry Wicker. Two plays later, BYU quarterback Gifford Nielsen tossed a bomb to Mike Chroidster, an From that point, team-uand BYU went ahead the Cougars were unstopable. "Hernandez doesn't possess blinding speed, but he has good quickness, sure footwork, excellent adjusting ability and great hands and timing," says Dick Felt, BYU's secondary coach. BYU coach LaVell Edwards believes in a strong freshman program. The Cougars go to the junior college ranks sparingly, only for spot help. Hernandez was one of those few recruited for spot help from Glendale S. C. (California). Tony played deep safety at Glendale, but BYU needed him for a cornerback.
