The MR-- electrertie meeeeito paler, sold by Norris and Co. ' Inc., Box 15281, Salt Lake City, M115, is said by EPA to have failed tests in a mosquito-infeste- d area on the shore of Chesapeake Bay. The agency ordered Norris to make no further shipments of the device. According to EPA assistant admiektesitor Stanley W. Legro, the devices are small, pocket-size- d urits, battery powered, that emit borely-audihlsetmds that Ologemy frightei off mosquitos. The sounds are supposed to mimic the cries of bats, which prey upon mosquitos, but apparently the pesky mosquitos either don't hear the false bat cries or don't react to '..hem, the EPA said. Most of the repellers are manufactured in Hong Kong, but one has been made in the U.S. EPA has authority under the 1972 presticide act to seize pesticide devices that are mislabelled or for which misleading claim are made. To repel! mosquitos, EPA recommends use of standard household bug sprays which contain approved compounds of pyrethrin. resemthrin, or allethrin.
