Colorful costumes will help turn back the clock to Charles Dickens' era when "Oliver" opens the Promised Valley Playhouse season Sept. 30. The task of fitting the actors to the era has been turned over to Jerri Grills of Botmtiful, a young expert in the field. She has costumed for SAuthem Utah State College, Utah Shakespeare Festival at Cedar City, Bountiful Community Theater, with a Montana theater troupe and other groups. Now she is the costumer for Pioneer Memorial Theater. "One of the unusual features of the 'Oliver' production is the large cast," she said. "I had to prepare 25 costumes in three weeks. "1 have made some changes from earlier design. In the 'Ooom Pah, Pah,' number, for instance, browns predominated. I thought the show needed more color there so I put more color in costumes. I also have put a lot of color in the 'Who'll Buy My Violets' number, which calls for a lot anyway." Jerri says shq has looked at many pictures of drawings from the 1800s for her costuming. She also has looked at many of the paintings. In her costuming work, she has done many types of productions, such as "Henry VIII," "As You Like It," "Hamlet," "Peter Pan," "Hello, Dolly," and a musical revue. Although she finds costuming fascinating, she also has been ou the other side of the stage as a performer. She was in "Hello, Do lly," "Sound of Music," "Li'l Abner," "Cabaret," "A Doll's House" and ethers. One of the first 'slays she was in was "Androcles and the Lion," in which she was the Lion. "That was one of my favorite parts," she said. Jerri, whetictcx1 at Bountiful High, from which she was a graduate, also graduated from Southern Utah State College and attended the University of Utah for two years. John Godey was author g of the "The Taking of Pelham -Three," the novel about the improbable but deadly serious hijacking of a Nev York City subway train.
