When grain prices went up, farmers reduced their herds and supplies still have not been rebuilt. On the bright side, the price of frozen orange juice concentrate one of the few items which has remained generally steady during the past few years declined in five cities, down an average 16.2 percent. Citrus industry spokesmen in Florida had predicted the decrease, because they said inventories were larger than expected. A look at the over-al- l number of items in the AP survey showed slightly more increases daring June than during May, but the amount of the boosts was smaller during June. No attempt was made to weight th,! AP survey results according to population density or in terms of v'hat percent of a family's actual grocery outlay each item represents. The day of the week the check was made varied depending on the month. Standard brands and sizes were used when available. If the requested size and brand was not available on March 1, 1973, a comparable substitute was selected. Items temporarily out of stock on one of the survey dates being compared were not included in the over-a- ll total. The Al' did not attempt to compare to say, actual prices from city to city for example, cookies cost more in one area than another. The only comparisons were made in terms of percentages of increase or decrease saying a particular item went up 10 percent in one city and 6 percent in another. The U.S. Department of Agriculture market basket issued each month is based on a complex set of statistics. It d includes 65 retail items of U.S. foods in amounts that theoretically could supply a household of 3.2 persons for one year. The department. which draws on information from 1,500 supermarkets in compiling its report, says the figures do not correspond to actual family food spending and are used rotinly to illustrate changes in costs. Associated Press writer Higher prices for a wide range of food items helped boost supermarket bills during June, an Associated Press (AP) market basket survey shows. The rate of increase during the first six months of the year, however, was well within government predictions for 1976. AP made a random list of 15 commonly purchased food and nonfood items, checked the price at one supermarket in each of 13 cities on rtrch 1, 1973, and has rechecked on or about the start of each succeeding month. Among the results of the latest survey: The marketbasket total rose at the checklist store in nine of the cities surveyed, up an average of just over 2 percent. The bill declined at the checklist store in tour cities, down a little more than half a percent. On an over-a- ll basis, the marketbasket bill rose 1.3 percent during June. The situation V as ail improvement over May, when the market basket bill was up at the checklist store in all 13 cities, rising an average of 4.2 percent. Decreases earlier in the year helped offset May and June boosts. A comparison of prices at the start of July with those at the beginning of 1976 showed the market basket bill at the checklist store up in nine cities and down in four, for an over-al- l increase of about 1 percent. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has predicted food prices alone will rise between 2 and 5 percent this year. A comparison of prices at the start of July with those a year earlier showed the AP market basket bill was up at the checklist store in each city, rising about 8 percent. Most of the June increase was due to boosts on food items. Only five of 57 items that went up in price were in nonfood categories in the AP survey. Pork chop prices rose again, up in seven cities. The price of a pound of pork chops went up in nine cities during May. The increases reflect higher Several Gov. Calvin L. Hampton received this report Thursday from John A. Mrs. Westwood, former Democratic national chairperson, will attend the convention under rules giving members of the national committee as well as senators and congressmen automatic govv:rnors, access to the convention floor. It was explained that she voluntarily withdrew after being elected as an alternate delegate because she already had equal access to the floor, and felt this would allow the next highest vote getter to attend, giving Utah an extra place at the convention. Mrs. Westwood did not seek reelection as national committeewoman because hpr husband's health problems require him to live in Arizona during the winter. families in Brigham City need housing, Medina reported George Talbot, Fruit Heights, Davis County, needs 50 pickers now and another 75 by Medina's memorandum said 16 Navajo families, 105 persons, are living in their automobiles ill the Provo area. JCE ' lk return to observance of the 55 miles per hour speed limit on Utah highways was requested today by Gov, Calvin L. Hampton. In issuing a declaration on the subject, the governor said the life saving potential of 55 miles per hour is particularly important as the Independence Day and Pioneer Day weekends approach. Hampton said in 1974 when the 55 miles per hour .;peed limit was first imposed the number of traffic fatalities across the nation decreased by 9,000. "The first year of the 55 miles per hour speed limit we were able to save more than twice as many lives as the total number of Americans killed in the entire American Revolution," he said, On the recent Memorial Day weekend, Hampton said 455 persons were killed in traffic accidents across the country and fatalities in April 1976 increased six percent over the same morth a year Not available.
