By Nick Snow Deseret News music writer The Hope of the 1960s, embodied in Bob Dylan and his Rolling Thunder Review, challenged the Disillusionment of the 1970s Tuesday night at the Salt Palace And for four hours, the 70s were driven into oblivion as the 60s emerged, driven by Dylan, Joan Baez, Roger McGumn and others who gave Salt Lake City one of the most memorable concerts in its history. It was Dylans first Utah appearance. Dylan, the musical hero of a generation, returned to the concert stage earlier this year with the Rolling Thunder Review to raise Carter defense money for the Rubin "Hurricane fund When the fighter was freed and a retrial ordered. Rolling Thunder continued across the country. Its good to be back with the people, Dylan explained. The concerts in other cities werent without their problems, however. In Austin, Tex., irate patrons who "paid $9 per ticket for the show suddenly found basis. Many turned their seats on a their tickets in and picketed the concert hall as Dylan worked inside. Denver fans received word two weeks ago that Dylan and Rolling Thunder would play there, with more details to follow. Without any explanation, the concert was rerouted to Salt Lake City late last week. Denver arena personnel and fans were still wondering why as concert time neared Tuesday. But if a few disgruntled patrons wondered early Tuesday night if the waiting and jostling in lines for tickets had been worth it, the answer became a heartfelt yes in a matter of minutes. Rolling Thunders backup band, led by long-tim- e Dylan associate Bobby Neuwirth, set the concerts country and western tone with a bright, bouncy group of numbers featuring each of the groups musicians. Kinky Friedman, leader of a Texas country-roc- k band, was then brought on for three songs. Then, the band left the stage. Dylan appeared without fanfare. He approached the microphone, playing his guitar and looked around as if he was trying to get his bearings. The audience, not sure who this lone singer really was, waited silently. Then the man sang, "Hey, Mr. Tambourine in that distinctive Dylan style, and the Man, audience answered with an appreciative roar which effectively camouflaged the songs first verse. From that point on, each of us was remembering personal bits of Dylan history: The first time we heard his voice, singing Dont Think Twice or The uproar at the 1965 "Blowm in the Wind. Newport Folk Festival when Dylan played with an amplified guitar and introduced the world to The slow transition from folk and protest singer into the closest thing America has produced in the European tradition of troubadours. The motorcycle accident that nearly took his life, and the years of seclusion during which rumors flew that Dylan would never sing again. His return, via country & western, with "Nashville Skyline. And bigger triumphs than ever in 1974 when he toured with The Band. These bits of Dylan history mixed with more personal recollections as Dylan sang Gates of Shelter from the Eden," "Just Like A Woman, n songs. Storm and other Joan Baez part of the concert ran the gamut from an a cappella version of "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man to the rocking Dancing m the Streets, which was whimsically introduced by the singer as "a little folk ditty I picked up a few years ago. But she also sang the kind of personal songs that have become her trademark, songs like the recently-compose- d Sweeter for Me" and Diamonds and Rust, her tribute to Dylan. Diamonds and Rust signaled Dylans return to the stage, and the two sang Blowin m the Wind and Big Jim, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts. The Rolling Thunder tour is the first time the two artists have worked together since they stormily split up almost 10 years ago. Other highlights of the concert included Roger McGuinns rendition of Turn, Turn, Turn, recal-hn- g his success with The Byrds, the most successful folk-roc- k of the nnd-60- s groups; Dylan and Baez with a Latin Poor his song, Immigrant, singing beat; Dylan and Neuwirth playing a poor joke with Where Did Vincent Van Gogh? and the audience not minding at all; poet Allen Ginsberg reading a Bicentennial poem during intermission and many people m the audience not knowing who he was. and the entire cast singing a rousing medley of Knocking on Heavens Door and Gotta Travel On as the finale. It was a long, sometimes tedious, evening oi music. But it was also a reaffirmation of the optimistic 1960s, driving away the disillusioned 1970s It's nice to know such things are still possible. m el ai st tr ri Shop 10 to 5 p.m. at Cottonwood and Sugar House W Save $2 Sale 39.99 gym set Rtg. 49.99.
