Show Wilson 27, 1976 DESERFT NEWS. WEEKEND OF MARCH returns to direct Johnny ONLY FOUR t OPEN 7:00 1st Show 7:30 4rTH NOITN "I thought so much of the script for this play that I felt it was worth giving up my sabbatical to direct it." This was the comment of Robert Hyde Wilson, senior director at the University of Utah Theater, who has directing reins for "Beau Johnny," a new production that opens next week at the Pioneer Memorial Theater. The drama was written bv Tim Kelly, who has done HO stage and television plays. He won the University of Utah National Bicentennial Contest and is in Salt Lake for the premiere of the show. Wilson had been scheduled to travel to New York and Europe for the semester, but cut out the European part of his sabbatical to return to Salt Lake to direct the play which will be presented April 1 through 16 on the Lees Main Stage at the PMT. "Even then, I got to see more than 30 plays while I was back in New York for three weeks," said Wilson. He has returned with a full beard that makes him look like a cross between Orson Welles and Burl Ives. "I grew the beard on a dare from my daughter iwho is attending school in the East.)" said 7TH AMT ?? TWO HORRIFYING MOVIES! Robert Hyde Wilson gave up sabbatical to direct play. 1 g says that the new play is professionally written "as was expected because of the background of the : author and that it is translating well to the stage. This is history, with some freedoms being taken, but it gives an entertaining viewpoint of history," he notes. "We have found pictures of all the characters portrayed in the show, from Gen. I'm impressed with Stephen Joyce the Broadway star who has the lead I think Hyde (Clayton, who plays American general Horatio Gates) gives the performance of his life and that says something, and 1 believe Judith Olauson will deserve an award. She creates a trollop, a mistress, but she does so elegantly. And Michael (Ruud, who plays an innkeeper) shows the experience he has gained while working on Eastern stages and being able to return home. "This play proves that history doesnt have to be dull. It can be entertaining as well as interesting, instructive and humorous." The story deals with the Battle of Saratoga, the turning point of the American Revolution, with emphasis on the relationship between Burgoyne and Gates and those with them Besides those named earlier, the cast includes Julie Russell. Robert W. Bristol, Jane Bennion, W, E. Poore, W. Neil Dailey, David A. Radosevich and Steven D. Miller. As to the new play. Bob is thrilled because it is new. For more than 30 years, he has been teaching a class at the University and has encouraged new productions. Not only that, but his students have won many national prizes and had their plays published and produced elsewhere. He himself has written 30 plays and produced four. 3 &'' A'Wx V?
