Show -sly etv4SeirAAA-9749-irlortrirw'w"-41-Arry- , , , V' ol"ltr'Vlew40-30-0V'Vw,v-,t,'teVi4V'- Symphony's A R R Saturday night's concert by the Utah Symphony and Maurice Abravanel can be referred to as the season's "quiet night" almost. For those with frazzled nerves, the first three items of the program were balm, indeed. And the fourth and final item was, for sure, a bomb. The program began with one of Mozart's early symphonies. "No. 29 in A Major" (K. 2011, not too frequently performed perhaps. It was an Mozart performance, as if conductor and players were taking time off from harderlabor assignments to amble through the work leisurely for pleasure. One could raise the point that the first two movements were almost sluggish. And it w as not only the slow pulse that took the vitality out of the music, but also the failure to preserve the pulse throughout. The third movement, however, had a beautifully pringy rhythm and verve. But these qualities do not preclude, as they do in the case of so many "classical" conductors. that warm sensuousness of phrasing without which Mozart is not Mozart but a protege of Stravinsky. The classical virtues that Abravanel displayed in the symphony also served impressively well in the -Concerto No, 3 for Horn and Orchestra" (K. 447) in which the eminent Barry Tuckwell was the guest soloist. easy-goin- g Abravanel's orchestral support was admirable FITGERALD-MICHELS- Tamara J., David J., : both Solt Lake City. Panta lone. July horn-playin- EL atter 71. 360 E. every way. The Richard Strauss "Concerto No. 2 in E Flat for Horn and Orchestra" was more of the same. Tuckwell launched into the work with aplomb. and .continued to play throughout with substantial attack and fluency. His playing was also predominantly clean, even in the more excruciatingly difficult passages. This is a virtue not at all to be taken for granted in even the best of horn playing and that was what we were hearing. Here and there, when Strauss allows (after all this is not, really, his most expressive piece), Tuckwell produced a poetical turn of phrase. He gave of a us good cause to think this to be order. He easily deserved the standing ovations accorded him. The "quiet evening" was now over. and the concert closed with the "Suite" from "Der Rosenkavaller." Seldom did Abravanel relax or give the music time to breathe. One doesn't think of either the opera or the "Suite" as being one of Strauss' stormiest works. Abra anel dashed through most of it, setting an over-fas- t tempo at the start and making a ous display piece of the finale. For me it was all a bit exaggerated and lost some of the beauty of its famed melodies, even though I recognize the skill required in much of the playing. There were those in the audience who thoroughly enjoyed the bombast. S., 44, ,,,l- Luella Memmott Luta Maltds, So. Sr S 111,1Wyst, Mod id a Sail Lake hospitai Nov. le WS. 1915, in d Mar- V.,k.. Sophie MIDVALE Tuckwell played serenely thoughout, with technical security. and with a limpid and clearly-focusetone. Throughout, the beauty of his playing verged on the breathtaking the entry of a sustained passage in the first movement, for example. The cadenzas were wholly suitable, of a splendidly modest length, and should have supplied almost everything the most ardent cadenza-fancie- r could wish.
