It would have been better, they say, for him to have kept his own counsel until he made up his mind. However, his move though perhaps serves to demonstrate Pettersson 's frustration and des r- - t has Relations between the two apparently went downhill from there, with frequent off clashes and almost open outbreaks of hostility on the Senate floor. Pettersson has charged that Dean was trying to dictate party positions on matters which should not be made the subject of party, loyalty. Dean denies this, saying caucus positions are those of the party, and not instigated by himself. An example of their differences was the caucus near the end of the recent three peration and, of course, it gives him a powerful weapon in his battle with Dean. , The differences between the two date back to the Senate reorganization following the 1974 elections which saw the Democrats win control of the body. Pettersson, as majority leader, felt it was his prerogative to make patronage ap- pointments and to be consulted on committee chairmanships. Dean, who as Senate president has the final authority to make the appointments, reportedly ignored Pettetsson. speeding sPt I Sucfi the switch would give side control, dumpcpr ing Dean as Senate president and giving the Republicans all oE the considerable prerogatives of the majority party, including committee chairmanships. patronage appointments, etc. , Z;) , , " fitioar 1(00111 There may be some Malta. peripheral questions about party loyalty oaths and faith fulness to constituencies, but apparently there is no legal c,,,a4aw .. jcF):..',H:...r.M,). 0, : . .. - , , , , 1 , , 1 ctlenobren, 0 t n ! She seemed to me to be under pressure from a (universal) need for acceptance which caused her to act in a manner very contrary to her usual' behavior. Is this, perhaps, a sad demonstration of the misplaced values in our society which we see reflected in our children's behavior? Sooner, sadly, did not have the inner strength resulting from a positive feeling about herself. This feeling- for self would have been needed for her to go against the behavior of the other children. This is something all children develop as they mature provided they have relationships with the meaningfulI people in their lives which reinforce their growing awareness of their value as a human being. d Her retreat from her "parents" looked like a penance for this act (involvement in the killing of "Bird"). This even though she apparently didn't see any other way to aim for the social acceptance which seemed to be a crying need in her life. To my way of thinking, this does not represent encouraging violence. The giving up of the "parents" through which Sooner was beginning to understand love as related to human relations rather than being limited to het animed friends was a beautiful representation of Sooner's basic (though untutored) feelings of right andI wrong.
