Jaime Villa lobos, first counselor in the Santiago Chile Stake presidency, his wife and five daughters tsited Salt Lake City during April Conference, and went to the Salt Lake Temple for the endowments and sealing ordinances. As a member of the stake presidency, Pres. Villalobos was entitled to come to conference, but he wanted to wait until he had the financial resources to bring his whole family. t, IlixsoftrtmtotglIflufrxtisli-z?iiw;s7titiewtti- : ii.,::4 ....., Jaime Villatobos and his family look at Adam and Eve statue in Visitors Center. :'::.1 , , 1 Sister Villa lobos, who is stake Relief Society president, said she accepted just as readily because the elders "had the powee to heal and baptize. "Before, anything was legal if you could win your case. Since I have been in the church, it has to be the!truth to me to win," he said. Both said their testimonies have been strengthened by going to the temple, and to be in the house of the Lord. Kimball, then an apostle, to their chapel dedication in 1909. At that time, President Kimball challenged ward members to organize a choir, promising that a choir would bring increased faith, unity and activity of the members and increased attendance at sacrament meeting. lie also stressed the use of a ward choir as a missionary tool. Bishop Clayter F. Forsgren aow testifies that since the choir was organized, faith and activity have increased in the ward. There has been at least a 10 percent increase in sacrament meeting attendance because of a quality ward choir rendering a spiritual number at each meeting, he said. Bishop Forsgren recalled many missionary accomplishments by the choir, including inactive members who were activated, nonmembers who have been I 4 CHURCH t t; r introduced to the gospel through the choir and former choir members who move into other wards who are better able to serve in their new ward. Eight factors have contributed to the success of the ward choir, said choir director. Richard W. Robison. They are: 1, A call to sing in the ward choir is considered equally as important as any other calling in the ward. 2, The choir practices consistently every week except on fast Sundays. Choir members agree to practice individually to make up for fast Sunday. 3. The director is dedicated to striving for continued and improved quality. "In our ward, we don't have a group of people singing, we have a choir." said Bishop Forsgren. "There is a difference." 4. The choir is organized and functions according to Church counsel: choir president, secretary, section leaders, librarian, etc. 5. The bishopric makes sure that funds are available for the purchase of new music, folders, etc. 6, Substitutes are available for every section. Regular members work closely with section leaders to make sure a - WEEK ENDING JULY 5, 1975 substitute is there when there is an absence. 7. The quality and consistency of the choir is maintained by practicing and Choir members performing may have vacations, but the choir never. 8. The director, upon request of the bishop and in consultation with the organist and choir members, prepares a schedule of choir and congregational anthems and hymns for each period in that year, year-roun- six-mon- Upon request from the bishopric the choir also presents special Easter and Christmas numbers. One Sunday the choir presented a complete program of spiritual music. The group has also performed for ward reunions and July 24th celebrations for the Rexburg community. Social functions are held each year to stimulate increased love and unity and to recognize the services of choir members. Brother Robison considers his position as director no more or no less important than that of any other choir member. "No one person is responsible alone for whatever success the choir may enjoy," he said. "Every choir member works together as a team in fulfilling their responsibilities." Warren Porter, choir president, works closely with Brother Robison and each section leader in maintaining choir attendance and arranging for substitutes when needed. He calls officers' meetings, transacts choir business with the bishopric and looks after the welfare of the choir collectively and members , 3 q . til 1 :: m individually. The organist, Sister Forsgren, and the various section leaders consult with the director in choosing music, recommending new members, arranging choir seating and helping choir members learn their music through arranging for and direction sectional rehearsals as needed. As the choir officers and members strive to develop their talents and build up the kingdom by music, they speak of "a great feeling of satisfaction derived as we realize the Lord is delighted with " the ".' 7 A 1 g a P "We see that the Lord blesses not only the members of the choir, but the r, entire ward membership with greater dedication, unity and activity," said B i ' 0 i$ 1 |
