Show Expo Choir A Labor of Love BY SALLY ALLEN GEAR Church News Correspondent SPOKANE, WASH. When the Spokane Mormon Exjio Choir was formed, it was with the missionary effort in mind. A simple calling to do what members loved and were doing anyway singing. The Invoice choir was the first group to sing at Expo '74 w'hen it opened in May, and was the last to sing when the doors closed on Nov. 3. When Sister Karlyn Frost (Mrs. v: JS toe Jerry C.) Brett, the director, first contacted the two Spokane stakes, calling for volunteers, few realized the full depth and meaning their sacrifice of time, effort and finances would bring them, or the strength of the spirit which would enter their lives, the lives of their loved ones and those who came to hear them at the Worlds Fair, 1974. Never before have I been able to reach members of my family with the church message. said one member after one of the regularly scheduled monthly performances at Expo, but they came to hear us last night and for the first time began asking " questions. In addition to the many hundreds ot hours she spends in church music, she also teaches private piano lessons, and is the mother of five children, all of whom share her talent and interest in music. Husband Jerry, whom she met when they were in a quartet together while both were attending Weber State College in Ogden, Utah, also has an operatic voice, and provides a steady bass for the family chorus. A sampling of opinion of members of the Spokane Mormon Expo Choir, which she directed, shows the high esteem in which she is held. I cried for joy when I heard the first choir directed by Sister Brett. I felt 1 had to sing with her!" was one comment. Another said: "Being here has been a fulfillment, not a sacrifice. Every performance I can feel the importance of the calling. We truly have a beautiful spirit in Sister Brett. "I could go on in this choir until the day I pass on, if it were possible. To sing under direction of Karlyn is a spiritual privilege, another said. A young woman said, To sing under her is the ultimate musical growth. 'Die growth in my voice because of Kariyns instruction is so great it makes ino wish to sing more and more, so that I lake every opportunity including the ward choir. SPOKANE, WASH. In her work with church music. Sister Karlyn Frost (Mrs. Jerry C.) Brett is continuing to fulfill a prophecy r. made to her George Washington Taggart. The prophecy, made by Eider Mathias F. Cowley of the Council of the Twelve, promised the early pioneer that if he endured the churchs direction to colonize in the harsh Cody area of Wyoming, his whole family would be forever blessed with musical ability. Thus encouraged at a young age by the enthusiasm and example of musical parents, Pres, and Mrs. George T. Frost, who re now presiding over the Montana Billmgs Mission. Sister Brett great-grandfathe- . studied for years under various teachers. She received advanced training at Brigham Young University, and after her marriage, her husbands work necessitated a series of moves, and she had the opportunity to work with top musicians in and out of the church. She also concertized with Fred Petersen, noted tenor with the San Francisco Opera Co., and with noted sopranos la Portland and Seattle. She is blessed with periect pitch, and has an unusually beautiful alto voice.
