| Show THE SITE FOR THE ASYLUM tim THE action of the board of directors of df the territorial Insane Asylum in selecting a site in davis county as the spot for the institution has met with very general beneral g dissatisfaction it is felt with how much justice justlee j ustice we are not prepared to state that county influences and prejudices ruled in the decision of the board rather than the motives which should have governed to carry out the spirit as well as s the letter of the law tile the report of the balloting gave rise to this tills feeling it seemed beeme J that each director acted as though lie was the special representative of the claim of his own county for the prize as it was called by many persons and there niso appeared to be a determination on the part of some that salt lake lafee county should not be the favored spot we do not presume to say that these were thel the facts we merely express tho public opinion now the law says the directors 11 shall decide upon said site solely u upon the grounds of healthfulness apan apin a adaptability to tho purposes of the institution cost of material for construction st and convenience of access from the merent different diff portions of the territory if these qualifications are possessed by tile the site at the mouth of shepherds canyon in davis da vis county more than any other place within the limits of salt sait lake lako davis utah and weber the counties designated by law we have no objection whatever to ofner offer but if that is the case we must confess with the bulk of the people who have discussed the matter to alack a lack laek of understanding of the geography surroundings and general features of that division of the territory comprehended ended by the counties named if were to refer to the general healthfulness of the bench east of this city citing the present asylum and fort douglas for proof andio and to the tile many advantages it possesses completely filling C the requirements of the statute we might be accused of advocating the claims of this county in tho the very spirit that we have deprecated but we have no ax to grind in this affair and only desire that the most favorable site sito sh shall shail all ail be decided upon as the act directs and therefore will urge nothing further except that the gentlemen who are ell en trusted edIth with this important matter will waive all other considerations than those laid down in the law jaw in thet thit event we think a L change of location will yet be effected |
