Hawkes, who was recently replaced as principal of the school by Jack W. Welton, said, the academic program is aimed at helping a youngster get an accredited high school' diploma. The school includes 7th through 12th grades. Mr. Hawkes had finished his contract with the Church school and his successor was named only recently. Although American Samoa is a possession of the United States, teaching in the schools is in Samoan with English as the second We graduated our first class in 1963 and in 1968 our first two college graduates in edu- cation came back with one of them going into teaching in government schools' he said. Besides the academic basics, skills in other fields are taught. Dean Smith, teacher in the woodworking shop, said the Samoan students are quick and eager to learn how to work with wood in all phases of carpentry. The school has a good shop with power tools which the students use to further their -- education. ' They seem to have a knack in the field of art also, according to Jan Fisher, teacher. Paintings and sculptures show talent in many of the students.
