If you are aware of the tremendous problem of crime jr the streets, alert and cautious m your daily travels and prepared to defend yourself when necessary. your chances of becoming a victim of these crimes is greatly reduced. We all tend to think that it won't hap-- j pen in our neighborhood or to anyone u e i ; ; course in judo or other method of you know whjit to do: but chances are you havent had time for such instruction 50 here are a few suggestions. As a woman you are equipped vviin some pretty good weapons. Dont be hti-tain using them all, in any order, as hard and as often as you can. Natural weapons are your fingers and fingernails, elbows, knees, heels, your head and teeth, plus, of course, vour continued screaming. You may never beat a man down with them, but you may make him realize that you are more trouble than he bat gained for and may cause him to ieae hiitriedly. If jour adversary seizes you from the front, in a position, lilt jour knee up and forward, smashing with all the force you can into his groin. This classic blow, properly delivered, can stop any man eoid, and its relatively easy to accomplish. If your arms are free, don't try to swing vour fists. Do thrust jour thumbs deep into his eyes. A very effective blow is the use of the edge of the hand in a short, sharp chop to the throad or a rising chop to the base of the nose. Don't worry about hurting an assailant. If he has rape on iiis mind, you should have mayhem on yours. If your assailant grabs jou from the back, drive a heel as far as it will go into his instep using a twisting motion if you can and all of your weight. Try an elbow to the pit of his stomach, his throat, or even his groin. Slump forward as far as you can and bite his finger, hand or arm. There Is also the defense of dead e, nt face-to-fac- e know. We couldn't be more mistaken. It Is happened in every neighborhood. And it can happen to you! Some advice to women and gills: Dress properly before you leave your bouse or apartment. Low-cdresses even ft bikini may have their place, but not on you when you must go out alone, especially at night. Remember that there are sick minds out there that might take this as An Invitation to what they're looking for, and sicker ones that could find it reason enough to kill. Be alert. Observe the things around you. Carry a good flashlight. Use it as you walk, not only to light your way but to check the darkness alonfc your way. Your greatest safety is in avoiding trouble. If you meet or are followed by anyone, feel free to cross the street or change your direcfJon, Look ahead for lighted buildings or other people, and get ready to run. No one can attack you if he, cant catch you. If you are wearing shoes be ready to slip them off before you start running. Don't toss them aside. Grasp them firmly at the instep as you would a hammer, and if you are forced t use them as a weapon, go for your assailant's face. Your greatest protection whefi "under attack is help from the immediate area. The fastest method for getting this help is to scream. Take a deep breath and let go with the loudest scream you can manage, and keep on screaming with every breath you take. If you can make enough noise your assailant may decide its not practical to stay around. He may, however, be on narcotics, or drunk and just keep on coming. Now is the time to remember to stay as calm as possible, forget you're a lady, and protect yourself in any way you can. If you have had a mini-skirt- Your Doctor Knows About Side Effects By GEORGE C. THOSTESON, M.D. Dear Dr. Thosteson: My husband suffers from asthma and the drug Prednisone has given him great relief. However he has heard that it is very powerful and dangerous and is afraid to use it as the doctor prescribed, although the doctor toid him not to worry about it. He is supposed to take six a day (I dont know the strength) and taper down to three when he has the attack under control. We know it is in the cortisone Mrs. V. A. family. Yes, it is one of the steroid (or cortisone) family, and extremely useful for quite a number of ailments including asthma, some arthritis cases, lupus erythematosus, and others. Your husband has been instructed to taper the dose as his condition improves, and that is proper advice. It should not be stopped abruptly, as that can cause unpleasant reactions. It should be tapered over a week or two to what is called a maintenance dose, a small amount that controls a condition. States, one every 20 seconds, with an economic loss to the victims of almost Depending on the patient and his ailment, it may be tapered off to none at all, but in chronic conditions the goal is a small dose that will maintain the beneficial effects while minimizing any risk of side effects. Granted that large and ' continued doses of the steroids may have unplesa-an- t or harmful side effects, your husband should realize that his doctor know s about this possibility and has known about it for years. He will watch for any possible aide effects and la aiming at establishing a dosage small enough to avoid any. Your husband should do as his doctor take the specified amounts and says not worry. Most cf the trouble from steroids comes when people take more than has been prescribed or because, In emergency cases, very large amounts are unavoidable. If side effects to begin to appear than the dosage has to be tapered , off. Your husband's doctor is having your husband do the tapering in advance to avoid trouble. Burglary is a crime of stealth and opportunity. Stealth is something the burglar will always have, but we tan stop giving him the opportunity. In about 2"0,000 of last year's burglaries, the door wasnt even locked! When you go out at night, leave a light burning. Be sure, however . that the light is not left burning in a room where a prowler can easily look in and see that no one is there. Draw jour drapes or leave the tight on a bedioom 01 bath. Tuere is a wide range cf timing devices available that you can meret to have the lights or radio turn off or on at a given time. Any method you use is of value if it causes a prowler to think jour home is occupied. There are not enough police to keep an eye on every home, or even ev ery street, so we must be alert and willing to help. If vou see someone or something suspicious, call the police at once. Social precautions should be taken for the protection of yo; r home while you are away on vacation. A telephone call will stop the delivery of your daily newspaper and milk. These bags are designed so they will balloon in the driver's face within .004 of a second after the first shock of a crash and cushion him from the impact. In tests with baboons, however, the air bag sometimes didn't inflate fast enough to save the animals from crashing their heads against the windshield. The researchers also worry that the air bag could be triggered by mistake, thus immobilizing the driver and causing an accident. They may still have value for passengers, if not for drivers.
