Show Moments In History 1846 Driven from Nauvoo, July 16, Council Bluffs, Iowa Saints made their way across the Iowa the Latter-da- y prairies. Their plans were to go West. In the midst of their preparations for the journey, Capt. James Alleri, of the United States government, entered tfye camp and called upon the Mormons for a battalion of men to aid the country in the war with Mexico. The response was prompt and the Mormon Battalion was organized with some 500 men. On July 16 five companies of men and several families, left far Fort Leavenworth, Kan. where the men were outfitted for what became the longest infantry march in history. 1847 July 18, Weber Canyon, Utah The pioneer companies of Brigham Young and Orson Pratt camped for Sunday. Heber C. Kimball called the brethren together to inform them that President Young was very ill. He said, That he did not feel as though he was going to die, still he might. Elder Kimball felt the brethren should stay in camp and not go hunting and fishing, but lift up their hearts to God in behalf of the President and others of the sick. 1849 A large bowery was comJuly 15, Salt Lake City pleted on the Temple Block and the first meetings were held in it on July 15. Boweries had been used by the Latter-daSaints to shelter themselves from the sun during their worship services and other meetings. Boweries were constructed by placing posts in the ground on which cross timbers were secured and then covered with branches of trees. The large bowery was used until December, 1851 when the old tabernacle was finished. y As the community grew the old tabernacle was not large enough to meet the needs of the people and another bowery was erected in 1854 and was used until the present tabernacle was completed in 1867. 1882 The Deseret Hospital opened July 17, Salt Lake City its doors to receive patients July 17 in the 12th Ward at Fifth East between South Temple and First South streets.. President John Taylor dedicated the hospital, blessing those who should be associated with it. Eliza R. Snow was president of the Deseret Hospital Association. Dr. Ellen' B. Ferguson was resident physician. i s i s Message A clear conscience makes you responsive to a still, of small voice within which tells Inspiration you when your soul is in harmony with eternal right, In 1884 the hospital was moved to the Deseret University building on the corner of Second West and First North streets where larger accommodations could provide care for 40 patients. Dr. Mattie P. Hughes succeeded Dr. Ferguson as resident physician. The hospital continued to operate until the Dr. Groves LDS Hospital was opened in 1905. ! I I 1939 I S I I I I I s i July 15, Liberty, Mo. The property on which the Liberty Jail stood was acquired by the Church. The property with the original stone floor and part of the stone walls were the foundation and basement of a modem dwelling. The property was acquired by Wilfred C.
