| Show great fire in honolulu acres of and lumber in flames A A honolulu paper pape r of de dec 26 has the following it is our duty this morning t to 0 chronicle one of the most severe calamities which has ever befallen this community about half balf past nine last evening an alarm of fire vis wis was sounded bounded from irom the bell tower the wind wina was blo bio blowing a gale pale av atthe the time and almost at the first tap of the bell we in common with nearly the entire population who had bad not retired to 0 o rest real rushed into the streets knowing full well the possible perils perlis of fire on such a night a glance glanda at the sky in the direction of the lower part of the town showed that a conflagration of no small dimensions was already under way hastening with all dispatch to the scene we wo found the wooden sheds and building makal makai of the tho store occupied by green macfarlane co ca in fl atnes flames driven by the force of the gale the fire spread out to fort street and down through alien allen and robinsons premise s towards the water until I 1 man wan in an ln incredibly credibly short time everything below that portion of queen street clean down to the water with the exception of the government warehouses and the lumber and coal to which they served aa a protection was one mass of flames hoopers keg heg factory andrice an dynice dyrice mill bruns cooperage and all the brille ings tugs on that side of fort street together robinson sot with allen alien Robin robinsons n lumber and sheds and the sheds of the steamer wharf were all on fire at once the government storehouses store houses bouses resisted the fire for a long time and showed excellent fireproof fire proof qualities qualifies but unfortunately a large amount of coal had bad been allowed to be stored immediately dauka of of the bu building I 1 and as in this case directly to windward and this becoming in a h short time one solid mass of nire fire produced an intensity and continuance of heat before which the store houses finally finlly y yielded elded eldad As saon soon as these mesa buildings we were r f fairly irly friy on fire it became evident the there was no hope of saving all any auy of the coal or lumber stored maali makal makai and in a short time ilme the whole territory down to and including the wharf was on fire at this point the custom houfe house was evidently in great cl danger auger and serl seri ous otis apprehensions were entertained for some bonie time that it and the warehouses adjoining ado ining would all share the fate of tiie the buildings on the opposite side of bf the street clouds of P sparks r and cinders at times filled the tho air ir and were driven over and beyond the custom house among the lumber ald and sheds occupying that pait part of the esplanade A frame building of wl west wese est alid and chayter on that side bide of fort Forta treet street took fire and was totally destroyed by watchful nes and hard work however the fire was prevented from spreading further in that direction by midnight it was pretty evident that the fire had reached its limits and thau that the custom house would be saved an hour later the spectacle was still a magnificent ent one the sheds and buildings with the exception of ot the walls of the government warehouses and robinsons old build building hig had bad disappeared but piles of lumber of various kinds baill burned fiercely while the great mounds of of coal glowed like ao so many furnaces millions of sparks and cinders of all sizes were driven at intervals down and across fort st and it was evident that the fir firemen a and volunteers would have t continue on duty all night it itis ills Is of course impossible at this thia time to give anything like a complete or accurate list of the sufferers the amounts of the losses or the insurance the amount of ef coal destroyed I 1 Is S supposed to be between and tona tons comprising the greater part of the stock in honolulu the total amount of other pi destroyed is estimated at between two an and d three hundred tho thousand band dol do iiara llara lars lans tf 1 |
