mily may it a small work to prepare for fur his coming I 1 do not think so I 1 find myself far from being pr prepared apar are A re we worthy to be received and dwell where our savior dwell dwells no one can dwell with him but those who overcome and endure to the end it should give us more energy and more determination to jour dur sins when wo we find pery everything thing depends on our perseverance verance to the end we should be energetic in doing the will of god we find we havemann have many things to learn earn carn nna and we learn daily ayour experience peri perl ence something we did not abow now 60 before ro re lind and thus we ve feel our dependence upon the lord luord for wisdom to lead and guide us into all truth it effs iffs is important we put our trust in god we may way have lave imagined that we ne were safe from danger and would stand but difficulties crowd w I 1 upon us which we had never P n derad and we are tempted and tried to prove drove whether we are aie willing to stand the trials 0 or r not it Is with us ua like the parable of the r so some bome me seed fell on stony ground some bome 0 1 m e fell among thorns and so per beed 1 I h ed bo so it is in the hearts of many who join foin the church of jesus christ some seed has fallen on good ground and has brought forth fruit the lord has said lie he seeks those who worship him in spirit and in he is no respecter of persons he has no favorites only on ori of righteousness we are all his children one as well as another his bun eun shines on the just and the unjust and he causes the earth carth to bring forth fruit for the benefit of all he is im partial in his hla character and those who love him and keep his com corn are accepted of him tf if you will not accept his kindness if you will not receive his bleis blessings sings he Is not to blame the they Y are offered kofl ered free to all without money and without price when jesus oame came into the world and died for the sin of the world he blotted dut out original sin he did not dle die for us only but for every creature these are some of the characteristics of our lord and savior we do 00 not receive his counsels as we should hould we are called upon to be perfect like unto him and to walk in his footsteps to be perfect and godlike we must do as he did while upon the eart bart earth h for he hebald said paid lill came not to do my will but hut the thi wiil of my father who 11 I 1 want to say a few row words on another important subject we are a pepie who profess to believe I 1 inree arey plu pir pl ions lons I 1 have though thought t many limes times that this principle was very juittle luule luuie understood if I 1 can have tb b spirit to sustain me I 1 will instruct the saints this afternoon in this principle is the spirit if which we wet are speaking it is neither more nor less thau than the thie holy dont know of two kinds pt jot holy spirit it Is the spirit of promise the same that I 1 imparts revelation elation from heaven I 1 have many times time s beard heard persons deliver rev cevela elz eli tion s in which I 1 had no faith what inver ibris difficult to be deceived if wa we know the proper channel through which they are to be re we as the church of jesus christ cannot live without rev if we had no revelations n this church we would not be tho the ho church dr jesus jebus christ ibis itis it is important Im important hortan when we et need revels reveis ions that we understand what hanuel ihan than nol noi they should we read in the early history 0 of this church that thai oliver cowdery who was the second apostle in th this is church was instructed on this subject ec I 1 and I 1 it t is written for ur learning g the lord told oliver that joseph was the man to receive revelations for tile the church he might receive revelations for but to the church must come comp through joseph smith 0 orthe the leader if we d need beed revelations for our guidance what channel should they come through you have jut just voted to sustain the twelve apostles as prophets se seers ers and aud revelatory revelators brother john taylor is 19 the president of that quorum therefore when wilen revelation sare needed for the government of tili this church i they will come through president john jehn taylor as long aa as he lives because he holds the keys beys of the apostle ship he does not hold hoid any keys or powers that he did not hold when president ighani Br young was alive or any other keys than are held heid his by brethren of the twelve I 1 burthe Lord will speak to u us through ugh the head of his church through him who holds the presidency we should all understand these thesa principles that we may not be deceived and if revelations are given from any other source professing to guide the church we may know they are not from god all of us have the privilege of receiving revelations for the church by no means meane we cannot receive all that are necessary for the performance of our duties I 1 we have here a stake of zion and a rt presidency of this stake can anybody receive revelations from the government of this stake certainly not it any person other than the presidency preside ncy ney should profess to receive revelations forita for its government govern ment mOnt would you sou consider sider them genuine revelations if BO ISO you would W obid be mistaken we ate entitled to the holy spirit to help bell us in the disc discharge harge of our duties and to teach us ali sll that is Js necessary for our guidance the bishop is en entitled titled to the spirit of reve halon drion to teach leach him his duties and when guided by that spirit he will never come in coll collision islon ision with those who preside over him some years ago when was presiding in california evening meetings were established 1 I 1 think it was waa about the time of the reformation on one occasion I 1 had been away for a short time and on my return I 1 found a large crowd on the waters edge some of whom were being baptized I 1 think brother hopkins was there and I 1 asked him subsequently what induced the people to turn out so suddenly he replied that some sister had re a revelation the night before them to be baptized I 1 told him that if any revelation had been given on that subject I 1 should have known it we should seek to be governed by these ples pies and learn to discern ine ino eair its and discriminate between mat that which la Is from god and that which 13 from beneath if we seek unto the lord he will give ua us wisdom to lead us usi into all truth it id 6 a berl seti ous thing to say the lord has spoken through us if he has not to say aay thus saith the lord when tile the lord has not spoken would subject us to his wrath and displeasure it Is in a fearful thing to fali fall in to the hands of the nying jiving god if we receive revelations we WO should be sure they are not leading us outside of our duties but tend to our instruction st and improvement and lead us to perform those duties devolving upon us there is another matter important to the saints of which I 1 would like to speak this afternoon it is the subject pertaining to marriage it was the first great commandment given to our parents in the garden of eden the lord said kibe be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth this principle like the principle of revelation rey uey elation should be properly understood and rightly tightly and legally administered isome borneo persons rubn into marriage hastily and inconsiderately with ho other consideration thin th in that they call love which frequently brings misery and unhappiness we have to tell them what is right and what is wrong in relation to this principle it would bo be unwise and unpleasant for an elder in ld israel to perform a marriage ceremony that could not be acknowledged in nh heaven eaven since the endowment use hoube house has been closed in salt lake city gity those wishing ro b be married according to the laws jaws of heaven have hal hai ha A to travel down to st george where they can be sealed together for time timo and all eternity for a temple 19 18 is 19 the proper place in which to perform these sacred ordinances we learn from our pa past 8 t history and experience that there have bave been deviations from this rule from time to time according to the circumstances of the people and the attention of the twelve has been called to the subject and it haa baa been taken under advisement we learn that although a temple stood in kirtland still the prophet joseph gave endowments and performed marriages in nauvoo before the nauvoo temple was built the same ame was done in salt lake city for many years and those endowments and marriages were legally administered and the way may be opened by which these ordinances can be performed among us without having to travel to st george for that purpose this ii nj doubt will be gratifying to the saints particularly to the young there are ordinances that can only be administered in a temple tempe hence the importance of completing the temple EO that these ordinances may be administered for the living and for the dead in relation to this deviation from this rule pertaining t to 0 seail and endowment swe understand that the priesthood is greater than the temple and that which ia is sealed scaled on earth by those holded holding 9 the keys key is sealed in heaven man many Y cannot go to bt st george to receive their marriages and endowments and should the way be opened by which they may be performed without going there it will be appreciated for all who understand the gospel and the sacred ordinances pertaining thereto would prefer t to 0 be married in the proper in anner manner I 1 dont know how far these privileges may extend whether r they or not it will be as the lord wills wille should it be the case that we obtain these privileges it will be no cause for slackening blackening our labors on the temple our dead friends are waiting for their baptisms and other ordinances which can only be administered in a temple I 1 cannot say anymore any more on this subject until arrangements arrange ments menta are more fully perfected there is no blessing that our heavenly father is not ready leady to bestow upon us on condition that we observe the laws and ordinances established for the salvation eal of his hia saints we are brought together from time t to 0 time that we may be instructed and learn our duties there alemany are many things to talk about we have to select a few and pass pasa by the rest the principle of marriage ia is one of great importance bur Y young oung men and maidens are called upon to become un united cited an and d to learn to live together and accomplish ail alt the lord has commanded one of the bishops remarked yesterday that the people liked coop co op aeration very much when they obtained big dividends which principle is very good if it ia Is right As latter day saints we have to deal with the lord he knows our hearts and comprehends our thoughts and we cannot cove rup I 1 be the secrets 0 hearts from him do that ia is right will vill be approved that which we do that la Is wrong will be approved disapproved di if we are willing and obedient we shall shail find very little ittle trouble in operation cooperation co we have embraced it in a small way and we are expected to handle it honestly and if we do not handle it honest Jy it would be better if we never embraced it at all we should seek fleek to the lord for knowledge and wisdom that we may deal with each other righteously that we may establish e sta blish confidence in each other that cannot be shaken the lord wishes to introduce and perfect among his saints the principles of union he intends to lift his people up and to make them wealthy when his will is done among the C saints there will be no poor among them when this time comes all will form one kingdom and serve one god we are all entitled to his blessings and all hould be devoted to his service it Is not bib bis will that one should be lifted up and another put down one be made rich and another poor Wah we have sveto aveto to keep this principle in view in our dur coop co op era erl tive labors and bo be one or br we are not the lords it Is the purpose of the lord to build up the poor and these pr principles I 1 sciples are revealed for its accomplish accomplishment ment if twenty or thirty persons engage in business and we make them more wealthy and others poor what difference Is there between ns us and the gentile world if it we do as Is done dene in the world wherein are we better than they if we carry out the principle of co operation with unselfishness ness of parit B and singleness of heart it will build ua us up and the poor also we do not want to take one mans means and give to another that |
