Show 1 DESERET October 7, 1968 NEWS, Monday, 7 '23 A voice has been heard in this dispensation, giving assurance that the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is the head of this Church and guiding it, as He directed it in ancient days, and has guided it since He and His Father appeared to the Prophet Joseph Smith. So testified President Daid O. McKay, President of the Church, at the annual general priesthood meeting held in connection with the semiannual general conference of the Church. president McKays address was read by his son, David Lawrence McKay, who is also the general superintendent of the Deseret Sunday School Union. The of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ. And so it is right to have the home teacher carry the responsibility of looking after the welfare of each individual. Assignments can properly be made so that every man holds authority, which comes by direct revelation, may recognize his ecclesiastical duties by exercising the authority which he holds, President McKay said. Tn his brief remarks, President Tanner told of a conversation with a person who claimed the Church demands too much, and that it was too hard to live up to the standards and teachings of the spiritu- al leader of the Church, upon recommendation of his physicians, remained in his nearby apartment and observed the priesthood session on closed circuit television. OTHER SPEAKERS Also speaking at the session was President N. Eldon Tanner, second counselor in the First Presidency, Elder Mark E. Petersen of the Council of the Twelve, Bishop Robert L. Simpson, counselor in the and Bishopric, Presiding President Russell Marion Nelson of the Bonneville Stake. Three young men, representing the Aaromc Priesthood, also talked briefly. They v re Dennis Backman Mark Peterson and Jeffery Smith. The session was conducted by President Al'd.i R. Dyer, counselor in the First Presidency. Music was furnished by the Mens Chorus of the Tabernacle Choir. VIA CLOSED CIRCUIT The proceedings were transmitted by closed circuit television and radio to more than 700 locations throughout the United States and Canada. An estimated 150,000 men and boys at these locations listened to the services. President McKay spoke on on the need for priesthood holders to be examples in daily life as representatives of the Most High. No bishup, no counselor, no stake president, no man holding a responsible position in the Church can afford to to the slightest sidestep degree his great responsibility of living the Gospel as He preached it and of being an example to the flock. GREAT SORROW Any man, holding such a position, who would lead a young person to doubt the Church by his actions, will bring dishonor to the Church and great sorrow to his own soul. The most precious thing in the world is a testimony of the truth. Truth never grows old, and the truth is that God is the source of your priesthood and mine, declared President McKay. The truth is that He lives; that Jesus Christ the great high priest, stands at the head of the Church, and that every man who holds the priesthood, if he lives properly, soberly, industriously, humbly, and prayerfully, is entitled to the inspiration and guidance of the Holy Spirit. I know that is true, President McKay added. HOME TEACHING One of the responsibilities of the priesthood here and the vast numassembled, ber in the Church of whom you are representatives, is to perform the labor of home teaching for the perfecting him. We are His sons. Let us bear the mantle of sonship and apply ourselves to the work he has given us in all Elder Petersen diligence, stated. There is no success, no joy, or no true fulfillment for us in this life or in the eternities unless our lives are in compliance with priesthood principles, said Bishop Simpson. He likened priesthood prin result in the blessings of eternity. Young men, if you take just one home with you thought tonight, let it be this: there stands no one man who speaks this kind of assuring testimony who did not have to first earn that right by compliance to priesthood prin ciples. Simpson said. LIING WTER We muct apply the principles of the priesthood in our own lives. To be taught truth is not enough. We must participate to be sure of the doctrine, to be certain 0! its truth. Only practice can bring The living water which the Son of God offers is a set of divine principles. President Nelson spoke on the importance of the heme and family. Home exists only to serve our families, and provides a most important laboratory where parents teach cluldien to share, to work together, rnd a home is a home children eer Four ways to build faith in were outlined by President Nelson. They were: father faith in children themselves and their family; father faith in their country ; father faith in God, their creator; and father faith in the Gospel and the future. Church. NO DETERRENT I do not agree with that kind of thinking, said President Tanner. The Church offers only happiness and joy. There is no deterrent in the Church that will bring anything but peace and contentment. I can't think of a thing that the Church teaches that is wrong. Has anything been taught tonight in this meeting that will not bring happiness, joy, contentment and a place in the Celestial Kingdom? There has not, he added. Be determined and courageous and have the ability to stand for the right and to do that which we know to be right, he counseled the huge audience. URGES NO VOTE President Dyer, in conducting the meeting, read a statement by President McKay in the leader of the which Church urged members and every worthy citizen to vote against the liquor by the drink petition at the next election. Elder Petersen prefaced his remarks by noting that the plight of todays world is but a reflection of the willfulness and selfishness of mankind, which is born of deep, dark ignorance. This is nothing less than amazing in this enlightened age, he said. TRUE PURPOSE If man had an understanding of his true purpose in life as is revealed in the Gospel, and if he knew the secret of his origin, he could begin to free himself from the shackles of this ignorance, Elder Petersen said. After citing recognized scientists and philosophers on the eternal nature of mankind, Elder Petersen said, What is the truth about the origin of man? Faul gave it to us: We are the children of God. We are His offspring. We are heirs of God and joint heirs with Jesus Christ. MIGHTY PURPOSE And what does that mean?
