| Show DEATH OF A GREAT MAN ralan 1 OLIVER MORTON united untied C 1 states senator for indiana departed this life at half past five this morning in it presence of his big family am liy and physician aa his hij residence in indianapolis this distinguished man was born august 4 1823 in mayne blayne county indiana and was consequently a little more than fifty four years of or age at the time of his decease he was educated at maine blaine university ohio where he graduated and received the title of L L D he practiced practised law in his own state stati for several years and was elected circuit J adge in 1852 he was originally a democrat in politics but left that party on the issues of the slavery question helas he was there thebe the republican candidate for governor of indiana in 1856 but was defeated however be he was wag subsequently elected lieutenant governor and on the elevation of the gove governor r no r henry S lane laue to the united states in 1861 1661 morton was inaugurated aa as governor by which title he was generally called to the last by his bis intimate friends during the civil war governor morton rendered efficient aid to the cause of the north and in the tho midst of gabat difficulties financial and political preserved his state to the union and brought it through the war in full loyalty and in a vastly improved financial condition L he was waa elected reelected re governor govermor during durling this time but being attacked with pam paralysis lysis which disabled him from active duties he be sought repose in a foreign tour remaining main maln irig some time in italy on his return he was vas elected U B S senator for six years from march 1867 hi his congressional career ia Is w well weil em kno known he was one of the pillars p af pf the republican party and occupied a similar position in thee th enate to that of blaine in the house he mas was a i radical in his views and a strong a and nd bitter partisan aggressive sive and bold cautious but buncom unab m promising he was elected reelected re to the senate his second term expiring in 1879 ile he was a nirm firm supporter 0 ter ten 0 of he the hayes hayea administration 1 0 n and his party have met with a great loss los a I 1 in n his death while ills ms native state is plunged into real grief arief at being deprived of one of her most illustrious sons morton morion was ia a powerful man ot of extensive influence and though we could not endorse many of his views or approve of much of his policy we admired his strength of character hla hia brilliant leg legislative isla ti ve abilities and his courage and determination in spite of serious physical disabilities his hia earthly record is now mow completed and his hia virtues and faults to the judge of all the earth who will cemper justice justlee with mercy and render to all men of every race race age agey creed and dispensation he cc cording to the deeds they have aone in the body ody their circumstances cum stances and th e ir opportunities |
