consisting of only fifteen families fa the Of Ord derville ervilla settlement was established under the immediate superintendence of howard 0 spencer formerly of salt bait lake city from about sixty or seventy saints the colony of knew now order folks have increased tp and from abject poverty have risen lisen to an abu abundance of the staple articles of life mr spencer himself was a well to do citizen of salt lakeland Lake and without the least reserve he put all his means into the order the balance were w ere ene all poor as we have been informed the community threw their tuli means into one common monfurd fund and commenced living like one family amily they all nto ato at one table and dressed in the same cloth their first wor kwas to open a farm of over acres they had sheep and cows the fare ha has been beeri plain no one has suffered all have had plenty for all hayo shared alike we are not hot posted as to the social cial clai and religious observances of the community but being mormons cormons we suppose they live mu much h as do those people in beaver city and other settlements in utah hard work being the great necessity the Or derville people have most likely found little time to follow the fashions or visit long branch or cape may but as they hey have a magnificent climate the tho year round they do not require bea sea breezes in the summer for the valley gismot is not noi too cold in winter nor tod t warm garm in summer and is much better suited to tb the circumstances of the Or derville people than would be long branch aeran As an evidence of the growth and prosperity fity i of orderville derville Or we may mention in this thia connection that for the last two years it has had graffito grain to loan ioan to its neighbors it now has lumber to sell and all the fat beof beef cheese milk and butter that tha stomachs for which it hns has to provide can consume ina lna in a couple of years moro more it will have all these necessaries to sell in large wes ses Or derville has baa proven a success and is now mow so fairly started an the road to prosperity that it is evident that within the next few years il it will be one of the most independent n dent communities in utah having risen from the possession posses sien aien of alrh alth almost os t nothing THE SYSTEM tile tha system to which tho the order tille people aro are devoting themselves is that of common stock the philosophy of which is well swell under stood at abo aho present day man MaD many yible able abie thinkers kers kera having given it their attention and written extensively upon it there are at this time a number of such communities in the united states and all of them as far as 23 we know are in a most prosperous rous condition A community Iving together in this way must prosper risper if they are industrious on he the principle that there is strength Intini in unity ty they must ever succeed it brings to their aid all that there is in economy and well directed effort it Is by observing the coop co op principles upon which common stock is based that communities have succeeded in all civilized countries and on the other hand I 1 it is a departure from these principles that fills the world with inequality and want J common bommon stock po possession session has been recognized by the tho benevolent school of philosophers in almost every age as the normal condition of society iii in our own times timea such minds as robert dale owen emerson so n john stuart mill and horace G greeley r ee ley have recognized its claims it is sug eug suggested by our very necessities as well as by our civilization and christianity it has but one foe and that is selfishness all that any human being can possess in inthis this world ia Is his board and clothing and this is made sure to him in the orderville derville Or community but the true nature of the institution as aswell well weli as its superior benefits are exhibited most clearly in the provisions which it makes for the sup port of old age and infirmity or derville will tae the same banjo care caro of its aged jend gend anu ana enfeebled that it shows to its most fortunate in members embers no sick person is required to th labor and nb ab old man dr or woman will ever lack the comforts of life ilfe rich men of course will wiil nob favor common stock they do not need it and the very selfishness which has enabled them to accumulate their wealth will did dictate tate a different philosophy they have made their money by individual exertion and very naturally consider they are the proper persons to handle it this of course is their privilege and or derville will be the last to guarrel with them about their natural rights it is A thel poor that we should be concerned about the rich can bin take care of themselves and atia live live as they choose there is ono one fact in ill relation to mr lape jape spencers acera order which we may nay noi not no pass in silence in collect collecting mg llis hla community like jesus ch christ rist he hb has had respect to the most nemy needy he has gathered together many people who i have hava themselves incapable of supplying their natural wants men with large families who have not known what it was to be free freb from the wolf att at their beir doors A great man many y of f the Or derville people never saw their way clear to la years yearb earls provisions ahead till they put them themselves s 1 elves under mr spencers manh management gement now they do not need meed to pray for their daily bread for they have two or three years supply on hand it ia is a fact that every observing person has bal remarked that agrest a great many of the people who have immigrated boutah to utah are incapable of making a living for them sAves aves they need just such men as mr spencer to plan fort nor for them herft hn and d direct their energies they need an orderville derville Or and thank god one and has been established in southern thern utah
