Show God Instituted Tithing For The Benefit Of Man, For His Salvation, Exaltation None are exempt from this law who belong to the Church of the living God. Doctrine and Covenants 70: 10 After giving thanks for the relief which the Lord had lately sent us by opening the hearts of the brethren from we agreed to enter into the the East to loan us $430 following covenant with the Lord: ... That if the Lord will prosper us in our business and open the way before us that we may obtain means to pay our debts; that we be not troubled nor brought into disrepute before the world, nor His people; after that, of all that He shall give unto us, we will give a tenth to be besd towed upon the poor in His Church, or as He shall . . . of the Lord with promise; for by obedience to It are we to be delivered. When the earth shall be burned, and when the proud and they that do wickedly shall become as stubble under the feet of men, the Lord has declared that those who are tithed shall not be burned. as tithing from His Saints. I was there at the time; it was in 1838 . . . We have had 42 years to study this doctrine, and it is as plain as you can make it, and yet it would seem that we cannot understand it. Do we want to understand the laws of God? If we do, and will read these things under the influence of that spirit which I have referred to; I think that we will understand our duties without much trouble. Joseph F. Smith I believe that when a man is in financial difficulty, the best way to get out of that difficulty (and I speak from personal experience, because I believe that more than once in my life I have been in the financial mud as deep as almost anybody) is to be absolutely honest with the Lord and never allow a dollar to come into our hands without the Lord receiving ten per cent of it John Taylor The law of tithing was carried out by all Israel, from the creation of the world down to the present time . . . Heber J. Grant Wilford Woodruff corrf-man- Joseph Smith Jr. The law of tithing is an eternal law. The Lord Almighty never had His kingdom on the earth without the law of tithing being in the midst of His people, and He never will. It is an cten al law that God has instituted for the benefit of the human family, or their salvation and exaltation. Brigham Young The people were anxious at the time the revelation was given in Far West, to know what the Lord required I suppose people think when they pay their tithing that they are making a sacrifice, but they are not; they are making a real investment that will return an eternal dividend. I come here now with my brethren that you may understand what is required of you as a people under the peculiar conditions in which the Church is now placed . . . the word of the Lord to you is not anything new; it is simply this: The time has now come for every Latter-da- y Saint, who calculates to be prepared for the future and to hold his feet strong upon a proper foundation, to do the will of the Lord and to pay his tithing in fu.'l. That is the word of the Lord to you, and it will be the word of the Lord to every settlement throughout the land of Zion. George Albert Smith Thus tithing teaches those fundamental elements upon which strength of character rests: viz., generosity, love for fellow men and love for God. It is impossible for a selfish soul to enter the kingdom of heaven. Paying an honest tithe is one of the very best means of overcoming these barriers to eternal happiness. David O. To bring out his attitude for such visiting observers, a Church official asked him, Dont you feel embarrassed at getting these commodities without d crate charge? The welfare recipient replied, I worked for it. Thats the unashamed, view of participants in. one of the largest, most unusual church relief operations in the world. Spurning the dole system, it enables the needy to retain their pride while receiving help by giving them a job to do for it. The element that preserves their dignity is that they have a chance to work for what they receive, said Elder Harold B. Lee, a member of the ruling Council of Twelve of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-daSaints, commonly known as Mormons. In a period of growing welfare rolls, difficulties in rehabilitating the distressed and of intensified attacks on persisting and poverty, the Churchs highly effective welfare program may offer some apt tips on how to do it. If you want to preserve a persons sense of independence and Elder Lee said, you have to give him something to do in order for him to feel easy about what he receives. That is a key poirt of the Churchs massive and extraordinary system, w'hich aids a constantly changing clientele of up to 80,000, which includes a vast chain of productive facilities and whose aim is to work itself. The plan counteracts the relief demoralizing features of hand-ou- t which is pointed up in the perceptive, old prayer, Lord, help the poor to forgive us the bread we give them. To carry it on, the Church has built up a huge agricultural, industrial and business network, including 650 farms, 30 canneries, a soap factory, coal mine, flour mill, a rug and clothing plant and five salvage processing plants. The main outlet for supplies is Welfare type estabSquare, a big department-storlishment in Salt Lake City, the Churchs headquarters. Elsewhere, are 10 other church stores, and 10-- bishops warehouses. The program emphasizes privacy. "No one but the persons who receives aid and his bishop knows about it, said Elder Thomas S. Monson, also a member of the Council of Twelve. That way his pride and dignity are maintained. Thousands of volunteers, not needing help themselves, contribute time and labor to the operation, alongside those anonymously receiving help. If those volunteering labor subsequently should be in need themselves, as in old age, they would not have the feeling of being on charity or the dole, Elder Monson said. They're entitled to it. e Ricks In y announcer. Bang Won Hyuk, and Ji Young Dal, San Chung Branch president, present the "Spoken Word" in Korean.
