stones ot the new tabernacle the assemblage first congregated in the large tabernacle and precisely at twelve noon from there proceeded to the southeast south east corner of the site of the proposed building headed beaded by the general and local authorities of the tho church in the following order of the apostles president john taylor elders wilford woodruff fl orson pratt erastus snow frank liu ita position ensel ELSEI GEORGE Q CANNON then offered ered the following prayer 0 our father who art in heaven 1 we thy servants have assembled together upon this holy and consecrated ground this morning to attend to the laying of tho the corner stones of another house of worship IP wherein thy saints can assemble to oner unto thee their thanksgiving their praise and their offerings and wherein they can partake from to time when it shall be necessary of the sacrament and also listen to the instruction that shall bo be given unto them by thy servants as they shall be inspired by the holy ghost and aud we come unto thee our father upon thia this occasion desiring to return unto thee the thanksgiving and gratitude of our hearts for the many ba blessings which thou hast bast bestowed upon us since thy servants first trod this soil we look back with delight at at the many favors and deliver ances which thou hast host extended unto us as a people that notwithstanding the many efforts which have been made from time to time to troy thy church andio and to brea break up the organization of thy kingdom upon the earth and to bring to pass the overthrow of righteousness and of truth as thou hast bast taught thy servants to establish them in the earth that notwithstanding these efforts we are permitted here today in peace and quietness to assemble together and lay jay this the southeast south east corner stone of tabernacle another sanctuary another place in which the the priesthood aud and the saints can assemble in peace and in quietude to listen unto thy word and andi to be taught and instructed therein and we pray thee our father that inasmuch aa as this ground has been dedicated and consecrated and set apart unto thee as a place apon which holy structures shall be eric erected ted in hi which ordinances a shall all ail 11 be administered and in III which t thy word shall be declared az and as we have been enabled to preserve this ground holy for this purpose up to the present time so we beseech thee this morning that thou wilt bonti continue nue thy favor and protection unto us as a people and help leip us to preserve this thief land and this de dedicated spot holy and pure puro from this time forward that no unclean thing shall enter herein that shat when tempests visit the earth this building the corner stone of which we have now laid may escape cape and may stand firm and stead fast that when floods descend it may remain undisturbed till it shall have fully accomplished all that is desired by thy servants who shall erect it or who shall meet herein hereafter here after affer that it may be a holy and sacred place and that within the walls of this thia structure thy holy spirit may descend and rest upon thy servants and thine angels be present and even thmothy self condescend to be present and to pour poor out thy power and thy bless ings upon thy ber Fer servants and thy people hear us 0 father in this our feeble supplication and in this feeble dedication this morning look not at the feebleness of our bur language but look 0 father fathers at our desires and our hearts for we desire thy blessing to rest upon us to rest upon this people keople and rest ret upon upun the honest in beart eart cart throughout all the nations nation of the earth upon all thy child children hen ken everywhere we beseech thee to assist us in rearing this structure that no accident may befall any tany workman engaged therein that the walls wally may rest reat secure and stand steadfast and immovable and receive c the timber and be roo fedan fedin and be finished without any ADy anything thing occurring that shall be unpleasant connected therewith that the people may be inspired to devote their thele means to its erection that it may bo 0 speedily constructed all ali ahbe of which we ask dedicating all unto tinto god in the name of jd amen the assemblage led by brother C J thomas aang sang the hymn on page 15 will come and earth her bar eins kins the members of the quorum of the twelve e and other authorities then proceeded followed by the conco concourse u arse of people to the southwest c corner orner of the site where the same process of laying the mortar etc was repeated by brothers obed tay taylor I 1 or and E brain the latter after the stone at chilt corner was adjusted tapped it with a ham hammer mier the assemblage next proceeding without further cere ceremony monys to the northwest corner where the same was done as at the southwest with the exception that the blows with the hammer were administered by president joseph Young who also assisted in the adjustment jus t ment of the store in the ceremonies at the northeast corner the stone was placed in position by patriarch john smith and president A M cannon the latter also giving the final taps with the hammer PRESIDENT JOHN jonn TAYLOR then got upon the stone and spoke as follows 1 I pronounce these four corner stones dul dui duly y and property laid according to arrangement for the purpose of erecting thereon a tabernacle wherein the priesthood of this stake can officiate and for the holding of general assemblies of the priesthood of this stake and a nd as a house where the saints can assem i ble for the worship of the tor tr such other purposes as may be dictated by the irl iri priesthood e atheode I 1 would further remark here that in laying these corner stones we do not observe the same ceremonies that would be observed in I 1 laying the ifie foundation stones of a temple but we do think it proper in all such structures P on h holy oly ground where edit edif edifices ices are to be erected for the worship of almighty god and the assembling together of his people that due observance and respect should be had to all these arrangements pertaining to the building of a house of worship to the lord of hosts therefore we have assembled together for this purpose this day and I 1 pray that no evil may arise or accident occur to any of the workmen that may labor upon this house bouse and that it may be speedily built and be completed for a holy place wherein the saints can assemble amen the hymn on page eather ther that the commencement that has lids been made for the erection of this building maybe may be acceptable in thy sight and may be acknowledged edged of thee in the heavens thy dwelling place and grant oh god that thy holy spirit and thy power may accompany the erection of this thia house unto thy ethy most holy name let thy spirit and blessings attend those who shall labor upon the same that no ho accident ana may befall them that they may be filled with the light of truth and with the spirit of the living god that there may be no contentions among the work men who ho shall ahll labor upon this bull buil building ding that there may be kopro no profanity and that there may be no hd spirit that shall grieve the spirit of the lord manifested here but may the spirit of life of lights light of truth of unison finison and of peace perva pervade dethe the hearts and minds of those thy illy servants that shall labor upon this house that their labors may be acceptable unto and
