On Although retailers grumble, ad agencies resist and mailing costs are high, manufacturers of grocery products prefer coupons over other consumer incentives, according to a report in the March issue of Grocery Mfr. Magazine. Couponing is proving to be a marketing "time bomb" and when a coupon explodes at the right time, sales receive a tremendous boost. This makes the coupon the best weapon in the promotional arsenal. The magazine pointed out that the objective achieved by good couponing programs is a decrease in the rate of "usual brand" purchasing; thereby inducing brand switching and preplanned buying for a new product or some other established product.
