experience in club that I 1 do not feel capable of a number of suggestions on my own responsibility they would lie be about as I 1 suppose as the advice of a certain young rooster in our old story books who insisted that tile the mother fuel should keep her ber ducklings duc klings out of water tor for it would mil them to get wet tret so I 1 have been leading all that thai I 1 could find in the reference refe ence tence works about clubs and making notes of the many kinds of work that are occupying them in studding stud ging Ning what ins been lone uy the me ainer caim y thousand club women in it america we may tind find sonic very profitable wais of it making out our lady auxiliary quite quete a power for good the largest and best known organization bation is of ourse course ilie the general federation of clubs made up of sonic some four thousands clubs which have united into state and national federation this is lone done by enrolling the club with the state secretary and paying small fees every year in re turn urn the club receives whatever aid it requires and is entitled to and a new social life is opened up to its members utah has twenty el eight ht ot of these organized clubs these four thousand clubs are working at a great many different things about halt seem to be mutual improvement bands spending their efforts in study among these are literary clubs which have programs of over in an hours length at iacia each ewt art arcq series arfi papers ole aie read which ire are io continued from time to time in series for instance s tile the club decides to study during a certain winter the lives and works of our american authors and the growing difference between the english and american language the major subjects are then divided into eight or twelve minor subjects and eight or twelve women are designated I 1 bated to follow up these minor subjects in ill order this is the eight winter niec meetings tings eight papers will be read and commented upon as bear the same general relation to the m major a subject is as chapters do 10 to a book besides these two continued papers there is usually a short book review an original story and a 1 talk upon current events if possible some noted author Is present to belh delacr er a short lecture or address then there are history clubs which do very much the same kind of work in historical subjects that the literary clubs do in literature and the he art clubs make mahe careful study of famous painters and pictures and form and color and prospective and tones and feeling and in grouping and purity in art and effect and detail and unity of subject all calculated to develop the artistic appreciation and in educate the club members into an all ability to select really gowl pictures for their homes and frame fraine them so as to give the nery ery best effect and hang them in the cioper light and they study artis and decorating in the home besides this they often have lectures given under tinder their auspices and tableaux entertainments or import n or hire famous Pic tilles tor for a short time and charge admission to 0 o see them the proceeds go toward altoon art gallery which when company coni pany comes and just how to 10 lo do it properly and just bust how much of each thing filing to make so that the poor family wont have to eat scraps for six days after the dinner party she lias a big note book full of good menus then there ire are tile the mothers clubs where the men members ibers learn exactly how to dress and feed and bring up tile the children that seems to me a fine idea only I 1 think tile the fathers ought to belong too in order to really re ally do much good v but by far the greater number of clubs are arc meeting for the purpose of benefiting their states and towns and and I 1 fellow ellow citizens andia and think as a commercial iner cial club we property propel ly represent the village idea ind and should make a closer study of this work it has been truly wonderful the amount of improvement that a small band of women can accomplish jn a town in various places they have planted eliu and ash and maple arres ali all along the public road and encouraged cou raged all the citizens to plant and trim their trees arid and keeps their lawns in order and their back yards clean of refuse they have distributed tree fre fower flower seeds and rose and shrub slips encouraged hedges instead ot of the worn out but fences which spoil the looks of the prettiest homes they have beautified their cemeteries and public school yards and secured a public park and good town streets they have complained about all public nuisances and immoral influences such as these enormous show bills representing blood arid and thunder and murder robbery and indecency they have devised means of keeping their children oft of I 1 the streets and away from lie gra loons tor for tho children don goin go 60 in pi el the le front doors the saloon kee keeper ila liuti i latil relation with the boys who deliver empty beer bottles at his back door I 1 know of one club a mothers club who pays more than the saloon haqq keer price for bottles in oater order ici to cef tal the 1 anny away lorn aiom his back door they know that if the boys can be kept from acquiring a liking for liquors until they are of age that there is little danger of their sons living a drunkards life these clubs ar are establishing free kin kindergan dergar grid and day tild and childrens children s nl cocking and manual 1 training classes and they are ts establishing tab lishing arco co pidy 1 aeils one of tha th efflo aj U needs satisfied by OL little lamorand lab orand a lew few dol lairs some vacant square or c corner orne r central to the town yet away from the main totters and two other strong boards each attar attached bed to the rounded stump of a tree by a heavy bolt nail FO that they can be pushed around and around make simple play things that always have made scores of children immensely happy foi hours at a time the swiss people have gone so far as to put up parallel bars and climbing poles and swing rig r rings tit in L their public school yards and at 0 the he half hour recess twice a day the teachers all come out and show their pupils how to use the outdoor out door gyn nas lual and those school children actually hang around the poles and spring boards tor for hours after school and you can bee those fat little gret P chens chebis la in their old country dress sonie sonic ot of thum thim only six years old too sitting on toll lop of those parallel bars and I 1 dont believe I 1 could climb onto one now they say the swiss school children are arc marvelously healthy and ta bright I 1 think that two or three ot of these gymnast ical features would be t an excellent thing in a play ground then some ot of these town improvement clubs are securing a special room in their public schools for the backward pupils and starting night schools tor for those who wish visit to learn to spell and read our language they are establishing scientific libraries for the young law students lents engineering books mining books chow chemical shun the patent medicines and cure alls that fake the public into buying them and then prove absolutely worthless and harmful they are complaining against the worthless shows that are allowed to dsipa the town arid and the ridiculous murder am atiq hair escape cheap novels and periodicals that are sold by the town deLi delivers jers to the boys and there ls is ano another othe on toot now very these lecture courses are malting making a great deal ot of money each bach year arid and they have become very popular the international Suns sunshine hinc society is one of the noblest institutions ever started stalled in america it is not strictly a Nv omans society however if it dries docs express itself in the ladies horne home journal it has members of both sexes its mission nils sion is to scatter the sunshine of kindness and charity among those whose paths ar are e more or less under clouds of 0 ness poverty or sickness members embers Tl are asked to look over the store rooms arid and closets and trunks arid and play rooms every fall arid and oftener and from them gather all the outgrown clothes arid and dolls and toys and picture books in fact everything that is of little or no use to them but might fill a r real ai need in some humbler home these simple simpie relies relics of other days aie freighted to the nearest state secretary and she and her distribute them there is tile the IV comans womans omans christian Chi istian temperance union a gigantic body of amazons arrayed against out our worst social evil the W V C T U is well known the patriotic clubs now consist of only the defendants of revolutionary soldiers but their work is noble and worthy ot of a wider membership members hi p their alin aim is to commemorate the brave lives of the heros of the revolution to foster true due patriotism apil and to aid in securing for mankind all the blessings of true liberty the protection of historical spots erection of mauu merits ments the furtherance of 0 the observation of national holidays and other related work there is also the womans comans relief corps an auxiliary to tile the G A it which keeps busy during war making bandages and helping and cheering tile soldiers arid and there ire are the suffrage clubs club which the men dien here heie tried to laugh out ot of existence but which are arc rising now more powerful pow erCul than ever since polities lias has become such a nest ot of graft I 1 think I 1 have mentioned all the organized clubs and outlined work enough to awe the united states stales army I 1 had to 10 tell of it all because I 1 cannot pretend to say what we are or are not prepared it to 10 do lo or what would seem worth while however it if you are not all ail tired dired to death now I 1 would like to lo wake make a more diore or less brief summary I 1 want to repeat for your consideration a few ot of the things that seem to me quite worthy 1 there is the childrens playground and outdoor out door gymnasium 2 A night school for the helpless ss st strangers rangers from denmark who could 0 gel ef g good 0 oil positions it if they knew a tittle little ol of our language 3 the lecture course arl an attempt grown clothes toys etc an empty store is secured and the articles assorted and placed for sale at very reasonable prices in this way a 1 I workingman can secure a I 1 business mans mails half worn suit for one or two dollars this has proved a godsend od senT in many eastern towns it may be that eastern women have much greater opportunities in club work than we do but there is one respect at least and a very important one in which we ire are granted what they long for and cannot obtain a thing that thousands thousand s of women east of the mississippi and other thousands over in england are struggling for and have been struggling aln for for r nany many years and are hindered in getting because of the western vest ern women who have that privilege and andl do not use it that 1 Is of 1 course womans comans suffrage when the women or of england who do more election vote the parliament answers ilow how coring arid and canvassing from house to house in the interests of their candidates for office than any other woman the world over who plan and work and think and dream and write and talk incessantly in the interests of good government when they hey ask the english for the right to foolish of you to ask for such a thins thing what would you do with suffrage aut fraga it if you had it why look al 11 Anle america rica the states there that let women vote are not d a bit better belter ost off they are in fact not doing as well and the women m e n of illinois when they strive to ae get t a voice to protest ag against the grafts which make halt their food unit unfit to eat and keeps them at starvation wages are told that it has been proved in the west that women will not vote vole for better govern government rilent that votes are arc either not taken to the polls or else are given to lo the loud loul cc bidder it does docs seem unfair that we should be such a block in the path of other Av women ollien of |
