" DESERET 'Oklahomd WondedM Shoi Ai By HOWARD PEARSON News Entertainment Editor The musical Oklahoma is years old, but it was born again Monday night at Valley Music Hall. Superb voices, dances, funny comedy, gay 24 g costumes, imaginative settings and performers who live the roles they perform mark the presentation of the Rodgers S: Hammerstein production. John Raitt, a big, virile, handsome Curly leads the cast His voice booms across the unforgettable Oh, What A Beautiful Morning, gives a new lilt to Surrey With the Fringe on Top, caresses the words of People Will Say, Were in Love and gets both humor and pathos into Pore Jud. He and the excellent cast perform with a contatheater-in-the-roun- d gious exuberance. The opening attracted only a handful (less than a thousand), but it's doubtful if a capacity crowd could have been more enthusiastic. From the opening moment when Raitt rode a handsome brown horse down the aisle to the center stage to the wind-up- , when he invited the audience to remain and obtain autographed programs or pictures, it was an exciting and Ado Annie Carnes,' played fetchingly by Pat Carpenter. But he winds up with a laughing bride, Gertie Cumby Eileen mings, played Roggosin. Dennis had only to appear on stage and open his mouth last night and the audience was set to laughing. Thats how funny the fellow is. Likewise our old friend, who porMadge Cameron, trays Aunt Eller. The womans talent is phenomenal. She can move from comedy to pathos and emotions in between with Raitt has sung Oklahoma for more than 20 years on stages all over the country, but he had so much vitality last night, it was as if he had discovered the musical for the first time. His clear, distinct words flowed out of those speakers without a slur, without a flaw. And after Raitt, it would be difficult to dub the most popular or talented performers. There is Joan Weldon; a lovely Laurey with a voice of lyrical beauty and with looks, figure and acting ability to match. Back again, after his winning performances in Carni an ease that is almost undetectable. She has done it in four shows at Valley Musics Hall. She could settle down to becoming a Utahn. And Utah's Jack Whitaker, who portrays Andrew Carnes, father of Ado Annie, has seldom been better. He is bundle of officious, but humorous officialdom rolled- into one. The show has many highlights. One Is the ballet winding up the first act, which tells what is going to happen in the final act. The choreo- - fhy by Calvin Von Rein-1- , which is superb throughout the show, hits a high point here, but it would be more effective if it were shorter and related to the rest of the show through a transitional device. Another memorable moment occurs when Curly and Jud sing Pore Jud, 7 with a humor, but an underlying tragedy that fairly live. Dancing and vocal ensembles are a credit to the performers as well as those who trained them. Roy M. Rogosin, musical director; A.
