Show tere TERR TERRIFIC IrIG STORM AT BRIGHAM CITY house struck by lightning by courtesy of a gentleman in this city we are aro enabled to make the following extract from flom a letter to him from a friend in brigham city dated the last we had an au awful storm here last night about 9 pm it commenced to thunder and aud the vivid flashes of lightning that passed in rapid succession were simply ter bitic there was a party at the opening of our new city hall in progress in the upper room at the time and it was once contemplated to dismiss it for fear of an accident but the presence of our beloved and much respected president lorenzo snow at once dispelled all anxiety on that score and the nerves of the ladies were quieted and all went amerry erry as a marriage bell we dismissed at ten and when I 1 reached home I 1 learned that we were pretty near having a catastrophe the lightning had struck brother wilsons Wil sons house at tho north gable tearing off the weather boarding from the square up to the cornice entering at the chin chimney mey passing through the flue into the inside then ranging downwards and striking the mantel shelf sh elf eif at the east corner and taking a small strip out but of the plank supporting the shelf clear to the floor and reducing it into shreds as fine and almost as soft as straw it then cut up some very queer antles antics passing up and down to and fro nho from floor to ceiling calling tearing small holes in the wall paper in a great many places and blackening the surface of the paper as if a hot bar of iron had been passed over it the pictures on the walls were all smudged and und singed all the gilt from the fancy fan cy cornice work over the window inside was melted off and the curtains torn and much damaged and strange to say no one was hurt particularly brother wilson was sitting near the door in in I 1 the kitchen and was rather unceremoniously moni prostrated his hia head comin coming t in in contact with an inside door which stunned him a little but did not hurt him much he informed me that he saw the flash and that it was so near to him that his face felt as if it it had been burned for two or three hours hurs after the occurrence nearly his entire family were sitting ia R the kitchen at the time g and nd providentially not one on of them was harmed judging from the appearance of things this morning they had a very miraculous and narrow escape cape it rained here all night and together with the wind and rain that we had on last friday night which was very heavy I 1 fear that a larger quantity of both gram and hay has been spoiled the house of the correspondent by the shock produced by the striking the iho dwelling of brother wilson was shaken from foundation to roof breaking a couple of lights of glass and very much frightening the inmates |
