Show Student Life Monday July 12 1976 Page 3 Old West comes alive in workshop Soccer The Old West came alive for a few minutes for those who heard Grace L Henderson and Elizabeth Williams both of Ogden tell tales ofntljei£ Hves in Utah and Idaho Mrs Henderson and Mrs Williams were guest story tellers West-Tal- es during the Heritage of the and Tellings workshop held on the Utah State University campus Mrs Henderson an Utah native grew up in Eden Utah “My grandfather and Brigham Young were friends back in Vermont Brigham Young came to Utah in 1847 My grandfather came out to Utah in 1852” Mrs Henderson recalled “Traveling to Utah my grandfather and his family didn’t have any problems with the Indians but they did with some of the people Many of them didn’t like the Mormons My grandmother asked one pioneer woman for some food and she gave her applesauce with Paris green in it Grandmother and her nursing child died I can remember grandfather telling of burying them so the wolves would not get to them” “When grandfather got to Salt Lake City Brigham Young helped him buy some property on Fifth South and Third East In 1863 father moved to Eden He ran a general store there and house which still built a 17-roo- m stands today” “Father put a dance hall in above the store Thomas E and David O McKay esed to stay with us on weekends I can remember the rows of pies ice cream and cakes and the par- “Father was good to us” she said We never wanted for anything I was educated in a Catholic convent and then took courses from a business college I got a job as a bookkeeper at Burton’s Implement Company for several years before I got married” came from Mis“My souri They were very select If you didn’t have a heritage you didn’t belong My mother-in-laasked me once what my heritage was I replied ‘my grandmother in-la- w and family came across the Great Plains in 1852 When you have the gumption to do that you don’t need any heritage’ She never asked again” Ranch in Arco Mrs Williams-the- n told her story about growing up on a ranch in Arco “I grew up on a ranch in Arco Idaho My brother and I would ride a horse 2 y2 miles to school each day I would sit in front on the saddle and he would sit behind me I got all the cold wind in my face and had red streaks down my face all winter I tried to get him to change places with me but he refused” “I taught school near Rigby on the Snake River for nine years I started teaching the third and fourth grade but I was nearly all in when I got through I told my parents I couldn’t stand those third and fourth graders and went to college When I got out I taught in high school for awhile That was more fun” “When I go back now those kids I taught are bald headed grey and old Where do you think that puts me? But I will never get old in my mind” “When our family would go into Blackfoot to shop we would always lose dad We always found him down at the depot sitting on the ties talking to about four or five Indian chiefs from Fort Hall” “They would often come up to our ranch and camp Dad would get so mad because they would put their horses out in the fields of grain and dad would have to round them up and put them in the corral” she said With their quick memories and sense of humor Mrs Henderson and Mrs liams said underway Stays active “I work in my yard too I have 200 roses Everytime I kneel down among those roses I thank God for everything I have” Mrs Henderson said “I also read a lot I read every issue of US News and World Report Time magazine and Reader’s Digest from cover to cover” Mrs Henderson says “And she hardly ever goes to bed” her friend pipes in “It is a great life if you don’t weaken” Mrs Henderson con- USU Soccer will begin daily practices today from 6 to 7 pm Inter squad games will be played Friday with possible tournaments on Saturdays If interested in playing soccer for USU should contact Fred Behm in the UC Room 325A Those interested may also come out at 6 pm behind the High Rise Dormitories where Coach Rafitt will be supervising Need Typing Done?
